Ken Pomeroy’s preseason numbers are out, and the Big 12 has wasted no time making its usual statement: this league is loaded.
Five Big 12 teams landed in KenPom’s preseason Top 12 for the 2026-27 college basketball season, with three of them cracking the Top 10. Houston sits highest at No. 3 nationally, behind only No.
1 Duke and No. 2 Florida, and the Cougars arrive with an adjusted efficiency margin of +31.66.
KenPom also projects Kelvin Sampson’s team to own the No. 1 defense in the country.
The rest of the conference isn’t far behind. Arizona comes in at No.
5, Iowa State is No. 6 and Kansas checks in at No. 8, giving the Big 12 four teams in the top eight alone. Texas Tech completes the group at No. 12, meaning nearly half of the preseason Top 12 belongs to one conference.
That’s a staggering placement for the league before a game has even been played, and it reinforces how punishing the Big 12 schedule figures to be again this season. CBS Sports’ preseason projections released earlier this week also had Arizona, Houston and Kansas among the teams expected to sit near the top of the conference race.
The Big 12 is coming off another banner year, with eight teams making the 2026 NCAA Tournament to tie the conference record for most bids. Three of those teams reached the Sweet 16, while Arizona captured both the regular-season and Big 12 Tournament titles before advancing to the Final Four.
Texas Tech’s placement adds another layer to the league’s depth. The Red Raiders are especially well regarded on offense, opening with the No. 5 adjusted offensive efficiency in the nation.
Here’s how the Big 12 stacks up in KenPom’s Top 12:
No. 3 Houston
No. 5 Arizona
No. 6 Iowa State
No. 8 Kansas
No. 12 Texas Tech
The 2026-27 college basketball season tips off Monday, Nov. 2, with Big 12 play beginning Jan. 2. And with five teams already in KenPom’s Top 12, the conference once again looks built to be one of the toughest and deepest in the sport.

Texas Tech's Fast Rise Just Raised The Stakes For Homecoming
Texas Techs climb in the national polls picked up another notch this week, as the Red Raiders moved to No. 10 in the AP Poll after LSUs overtime loss to Kentucky. They held steady at No. 9 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, a sign that the early-season respect around the program is showing up in more than one set of rankings.
The timing only adds to the buzz around homecoming, where the football team will sit at the center of a campus full of events and attention. With the Red Raiders now carrying a top-10 profile into the week, the rest of the schedule around homecoming suddenly feels a little bigger, and the stakes around every appearance a little sharper.
