The latest On3 Big 12 Coaches Poll says BYU is the favorite to win the conference, but the real story is how messy the rest of the ballot looks.
Sixteen Big 12 coaches picked the Cougars to take the league title, with Texas Tech right behind them at four votes. Utah and Houston each pulled in two votes, while Arizona got one and Iowa State got one as well.
That’s where the poll starts to feel a little wild. TCU ended up grouped with Iowa State and West Virginia in the discussion, and two different coaches actually chose the Cyclones and Mountaineers to win the whole thing. That’s the kind of result that makes the whole exercise feel like a little bit of trolling.
A BYU-Texas Tech championship matchup makes sense on paper, but the poll seems to sell short what TCU, Utah and Houston could be this season. Arizona also belongs in the conversation as a team that could spoil things late, especially with Noah Fifita entering the year carrying Heisman-level expectations.
The bigger takeaway is how wide open the league looks. Seven Big 12 coaches - nearly half the conference - picked Houston or Utah just to reach the title game, which says plenty about how little separation there is right now.
Parity is the Big 12’s calling card, and the fact that BYU and Texas Tech don’t meet in the regular season only adds to the uncertainty. Utah’s role matters too, especially with the Holy War carrying major implications for the conference race. Add Utah’s road trip and BYU’s non-conference game against Notre Dame in Provo, and Kalani Sitake has a couple of potential stumbling blocks in front of him.
In the end, the poll says as much about the league’s unpredictability as it does about any actual favorite. Coaches had some fun with it, and the results leave you with two clear messages: BYU is the name at the top, and the Big 12 is still impossible to pin down.

Texas Tech Suddenly Has A Quarterback Problem Nobody Saw Coming
Texas Tech thought it had settled its quarterback situation when it signed Brendan Sorsby out of the transfer portal, but that plan unraveled quickly when the NCAA ruled him ineligible for the upcoming season. After a court injunction changed the picture, Sorsby and the Red Raiders ultimately parted ways, leaving the staff back at square one just as the season approaches.
Now the focus shifts to Will Hammond, whose recovery from a torn ACL has become one of the most important storylines in Lubbock. Texas Tech still has the kind of roster that can keep it in the Big 12 mix, but the ceiling for this team may come down to whether Hammond is ready and healthy enough to steady the offense and keep the Red Raiders in the playoff conversation. ESPN Just Sent BYU Fans Back Into The Disrespect Debate
ESPNs latest 2026 College Football Power Index offered a pretty clear snapshot of where the Big 12 sits entering the season, and Texas Tech is one of the few league teams drawing serious national respect. The Red Raiders landed at No. 10 overall, putting them in a strong position in a conference that otherwise has only one other team in the top 25, BYU at No. 20.
For Texas Tech, the ranking reflects both the optimism around the roster and the reality that the Big 12 still has work to do as a whole. Utah, Arizona and Houston are all hovering just outside the top 30, which underscores how thin the leagues upper tier looks right now and why every national ranking tends to turn into a larger conversation about where the conference fits in the sports pecking order. Texas Tech Quarterback Situation Just Took Another Tense Turn
The Big 12s media days in Frisco brought plenty of quarterback talk, and Texas Tech found itself right in the middle of it as the leagues offseason picture kept shifting. With TCU settling on Harvard transfer Jaden Craig and several programs introducing new head coaches, the Red Raiders are trying to keep their own plans steady while the conference around them keeps changing.
For Texas Tech, the position is already under a fresh spotlight after a recent roster move left the depth chart looking different than it did a week ago. Joey McGuire has also had to manage the conversation around Will Hammond, who is working back from the ACL tear he suffered against Oklahoma State last season and could be in the mix as soon as the Sept. 5 opener against Abilene Christian.
