Big 12 Clash Escalates Between Yormark And Campbell

Tensions rise in the Big 12 as Texas Tech's Cody Campbell clashes with Commissioner Brett Yormark over controversial Friday night scheduling, highlighting the broader battle for conference identity and tradition.

Big 12 football is already serving up some drama, and it's only April. The spotlight is on Texas Tech, where Cody Campbell, Chairman of the Board of Regents, has openly criticized Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark.

The bone of contention? The potential shift of Texas Tech's Sept. 19 home game against Houston to a Friday night slot.

Yormark responded to the critique, emphasizing the strategic move to elevate Big 12 football's profile. “Cody Campbell does not run the Big 12,” Yormark stated.

He highlighted that the decision to play 12 games a year off Saturdays was approved by the Board and athletic directors to boost viewership and narrative. Last year, Friday night Big 12 games outperformed the conference’s average ratings by 64%, making the case for continuing this trend.

Campbell, however, isn't backing down, taking to social media with a pointed reminder of Texas Tech's influence: “EVERYTHING RUNS THROUGH LUBBOCK!!”

In 2025, the Big 12 scheduled 10 Friday night games, including seven conference matchups. While Houston and TCU were in the mix, Texas Tech was one of the few that didn’t play on a Friday. Now, with the 2026 schedule out, but specific dates still pending, the debate continues over Friday night games, especially considering the championship clash set for Dec. 4 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Texas Tech remains a pivotal player in the Big 12 landscape, despite their recent playoff setback. Campbell's concerns are rooted in the tradition of high school football, a cherished Friday night staple in Texas and beyond. The league's foray into these timeslots since 2021 has stirred conversations, particularly with the cultural significance of high school games.

While Friday college games aren't new-both the SEC and Big Ten have dabbled in them-the Big 12's focus on this timeslot, especially for marquee matchups like Tech-Houston, marks a bold strategy. Yormark is clearly committed to expanding the league's reach, regardless of the pushback.

In this tug-of-war over Friday nights, the Big 12 is making it clear: they're playing for keeps, and the stakes are higher than ever.
