Colorado’s quarterback situation took a sharp turn after Deion Sanders benched redshirt freshman Julian Lewis following his struggles against Baylor in Week 4, and the fallout could reach beyond one game.
ESPN and CBS Sports reported that the Buffaloes are planning to start junior Isaac Wilson against No. 11 Texas Tech, which has only deepened the uncertainty around the position. Sanders, though, didn’t fully concede that the decision had already been made.
“I know some people are running with the narrative that [the quarterback battle]'s already decided,” said Sanders in his Tuesday press conference. “I think I'm the one who makes that decision.
I don't know where they get that from, and they didn't get it from me. So we'll see how our practice plays out this week.”
Still, the move away from Lewis raises a bigger question about where things go next. If he is no longer the starter, his future in Boulder suddenly looks a lot less settled.
Sanders explained the switch after Colorado’s 23-13 loss to Baylor, describing Wilson as the steady hand who could settle things down in the moment.
“When you go to Isaac, it’s like, Isaac is going to come in and clean it up, he’s going to do his job, he’s going to get us in the right positions and he’s going to do his thing,” said Sanders following Colorado’s 23-13 loss to Baylor. “Don’t give up on JuJu…That kid plays with tremendous effort and heart; he’s not quitting and he’s not abandoning anybody.
We just needed a change. We needed inspiration in that time in some kind of way.”
That kind of change, though, can come with a cost. Lewis was a five-star quarterback out of high school according to ESPN, and as a redshirt freshman who just turned 19 years old, he still has plenty of runway left. If Colorado can’t keep him on board, another program would likely be eager to step in.
A major school willing to invest in his development could also bring a strong NIL package with it. And if the issue is the ‘Go-Go’ offense, a fresh start in a system that fits him better could lead to a quick turnaround.
For Colorado, that would be the hard part to watch: a young quarterback with real upside finding his way somewhere else.
From the Buffaloes’ perspective, sticking with Lewis may still be the smartest path. Wilson can offer short-term steadiness for Sanders, but he is not the long-term answer. He showed plenty of bad habits while starting for Utah, and with less than two seasons left in his college career at most, there isn’t much time to clean those up.
If Colorado wants Lewis to become the quarterback it envisioned, the path is clear: trust the process, keep his confidence intact, and build the scheme around him. It may take longer, but the alternative could cost the Buffs much more.

Texas Tech Could Get A Needed Passing Game Boost Vs Colorado
Texas Tech heads back into Big 12 play against Colorado with a chance to get a useful piece of its passing game back in the mix. Tight end Terrance Carter Jr. is expected to return after missing one game because of injury, and Joey McGuire sounded upbeat about what that could mean for an offense looking for more balance and more easy production through the air.
Carter is listed as questionable on the injury report, but that designation has not always kept him off the field. If he does suit up, the Red Raiders would be adding a target who can help after the catch and give the passing game a little more flexibility, which is the sort of boost teams are always happy to find when conference play tightens up. Texas Tech Faces A Road Test That Could Get Uncomfortable Fast
Colorados homecoming game brings No. 12 Texas Tech into a setting where the Buffaloes will need to be sharp early, even as the visitors arrive favored and with plenty of momentum. The matchup starts in the trenches, where Colorados interior defensive line has the unenviable task of slowing the Red Raiders run game and making life difficult for quarterback Will Hammond, who is still working back from a torn ACL.
On the other side, Colorados offense has a challenge of its own in the passing game, where receiver Williams is set to see plenty of Texas Tech top cornerback Brice Pollock. If that matchup tilts the wrong way for Colorado, the Buffaloes could be in for a long afternoon, with little room to ease into the kind of game they need to make homecoming matter. [Read more 🡒]
Colorado Could Catch Texas Tech In A Quarterback Mess
With Texas Tech still waiting on guidance from its compliance office, the quarterback picture has suddenly become one of the biggest questions heading into the matchup with Colorado. The issue centers on Tommy Castellanos, whose status changed after the Kentucky Court of Appeals ruled on Oct. 2 that he was ineligible to play, dissolving the temporary injunction that had kept him on the field as a fifth-year college athlete.
For the Red Raiders, the timing is far from ideal. Any decision on whether Castellanos can be used against Colorado will rest with the schools compliance staff, leaving Texas Tech to sort through an uncertain situation just as the game approaches. It adds another layer of intrigue to a quarterback room already under pressure, with the next step still hanging in the balance. [Read more 🡒]
