The Texas Rangers have made a strategic move by signing left-handed reliever Jalen Beeks to a one-year contract. To accommodate Beeks on the 40-man roster, the Rangers have designated relief pitcher Alexis Diaz for assignment.
This decision follows Beeks' signing announcement, where roster adjustments were anticipated. Many speculated that either Michel Otanez or Dairon Blanco might be moved to make room, but it turns out Diaz was the one affected. Diaz, who joined the Rangers after being released by the Atlanta Braves at the end of the 2025 season, is set to earn $1 million this year.
Diaz's recent performance has been less than stellar. In 2025, he struggled across three teams-the Reds, Dodgers, and Braves-posting an 8.15 ERA over 17.2 innings in 18 appearances.
Once a reliable closer for the Reds in 2023, Diaz's recent seasons have seen a decline in his strikeout rate and an increase in walks, along with allowing six home runs in limited innings last year. His time in Triple-A didn’t fare much better, with a 5.61 ERA in 27 appearances.
Despite having options left, the Rangers likely believe Diaz will clear waivers due to his current form, as evidenced by his spring training struggles-giving up eight earned runs in just 1.2 innings over three appearances. If another team claims him, the Rangers seem prepared to move forward without him.
Jalen Beeks now steps into the spotlight, and fans will be eager to see how he bolsters the bullpen this season.
