DeSoto’s season opener in Fort Lauderdale turned into more than a lopsided loss. Before the first snap, three of the program’s four captains declined to shake hands with St. Thomas Aquinas players during the coin toss, and the moment quickly blew up online after ESPN’s cameras caught it live.
The reaction was immediate and widespread, especially because the game featured two of the country’s most recognizable high school programs. DeSoto, representing Texas, and St.
Thomas Aquinas, representing Florida, had one of the most anticipated opening-week matchups in the country. The handshake snub became the story almost as soon as the video started circulating.
DeSoto coach Claude Mathis told The Dallas Morning News that his team had been subjected to racist comments before the game. High School On SI has not independently verified Mathis' account.
Texas Tech commit SaRod Baker was the only DeSoto captain who did shake hands with the St. Thomas Aquinas captains.

Tyeskie responded with a statement released by the district, saying, "I normally wouldn’t respond to the propaganda about this incident that occurred this past contest but I feel I need to say something. Our captains made a poor decision by not shaking their opponents hand before the game.

The football program also issued its own apology on the official DeSoto account, calling the moment “an opportunity for our young men to learn and grow from their mistakes.” The statement said DeSoto takes “full responsibility for the conduct of our players” and is committed to making sure its student-athletes meet the standards of sportsmanship and character expected by the program and community.
Once the game started, St. Thomas Aquinas took complete control.
DeSoto fell 38-14, with the Raiders up 38-0 at halftime before the Eagles scored twice in the second half. Blake Calixte and Julius Jones Jr. led the offense, while Jaden Carey and Zayden Gamble added touchdowns on defense and special teams.
DeSoto now turns its attention to Friday, Sept. 4, when it visits Allen in an effort to avoid an 0-2 start. The Eagles opened the season with a 26-7 win over Duncanville. Allen is led by star 2029 quarterback Ty Snell, who already has more than 30 Division I offers.
That matchup will be played at Allen’s Eagle Stadium and shown on WFAA’s YouTube channel and the WFAA App.
