Schumaker Benches Josh Jung In Bold Rangers Move

Rangers manager Skip Schumaker makes a bold lineup call, opting for Ezequiel Durn over struggling Josh Jung against the Orioles.

Josh Jung Sits Out as Rangers Face Orioles

In a surprising move, Texas Rangers' third baseman Josh Jung is missing from the lineup as they prepare to take on the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards tonight. Instead, Ezequiel Durán steps in at third base. Durán, a versatile utility player, has already shown promise with a double in five plate appearances this season.

While it’s not uncommon for players to get a day off, Jung’s absence raises eyebrows due to his challenging start to the season. Over 17 plate appearances in the first four games, Jung hasn’t managed a hit or a walk and has struck out seven times. Not exactly the start expected from a key player on a team with playoff ambitions.

Jung, 28, had an impressive spring training, hitting .333/.368/.667 with a homer, a triple, and a double in 19 plate appearances. This makes his early-season slump all the more puzzling. Perhaps today’s rest is just what he needs to reset and find his groove at the plate.

Jung's Potential Impact on the Rangers

Reflecting on Jung’s past, just three seasons ago, he was a standout with a .266/.315/.467 slash line, 23 homers, and 70 RBIs, finishing fourth in the AL Rookie of the Year race. His postseason performance in 2023 was crucial, batting .308/.329/.538 with three homers and eight RBIs. If Jung can return to this form, the Rangers’ lineup will be significantly bolstered.

Injuries have been a hurdle for Jung, limiting him to 46 games in 2024, where he posted a .264/.298/.421 line. Though mostly healthy in 2025, his performance didn’t quite meet expectations, with an OPS below .700. Despite this, his OPS+ was a league-average 100, hinting at his potential to bounce back.

Jung’s defensive skills add to his value, suggesting the Rangers won’t rush any decisions. As they face right-hander Zach Eflin tonight, the hope is that a refreshed Jung will soon return to form, bringing stability and power back to the lineup.
