The Texas Rangers have strung together six straight home series wins, the longest run they’ve put together at Globe Life Field. That kind of momentum gets tested starting Thursday, when Tampa Bay comes to town for four games with a lot hanging over both clubs.
Texas enters the set at 69-71 after Wednesday’s loss to the Athletics kept it from getting back to .500 and spoiled a chance at a sweep. Still, the Rangers have enough in front of them to make this series matter beyond the home streak. Taking three of four from the Rays would help them stay in step with the Houston Astros in the AL West race and keep pace with the Cleveland Guardians in the wild card chase.
Tampa Bay, meanwhile, is in a different spot but not one where it can relax. At 83-55, the Rays are close to locking up a playoff berth, but the AL East is still very much in play.
They hold only a 4.5-game lead over the New York Yankees, and winning the division would secure homefield advantage throughout the American League playoffs. The Rays have won seven of their last 10 and have lined up their rotation so their top arms will face Texas.
The series opens Thursday with Rangers right-hander Cal Quantrill against Rays left-hander Shane McClanahan. On Friday, Texas sends Kumar Rocker to the mound opposite Tampa Bay’s Nick Martinez. Saturday brings Jacob deGrom against Drew Rasmussen, and Sunday’s finale has MacKenzie Gore for the Rangers with the Rays yet to announce a starter.
Quantrill was selected by the media covering the club as the Rangers’ August player of the month, and he’s been rolling lately. Over his last seven outings, he is 3-2 with a 1.49 ERA, and he’s won two of his last three starts while going at least six innings in each. He has also won his last two home starts.
Rocker has shown better results at home than on the road this season. Over his last seven starts, he is 2-2 with a 5.35 ERA, along with 38 strikeouts and 19 walks. His last outing was a short one against Milwaukee, when he worked only three innings and allowed four hits, two earned runs and four walks while striking out seven.
DeGrom is coming off one of his sharpest starts of the season. Against the Athletics on Monday, he allowed one hit over seven innings and struck out eight.
In his last seven starts, he is 3-3 with a 4.78 ERA, 39 strikeouts and 13 walks. He has given up just two hits in each of his last two home starts.
Gore also enters the series after a win, having beaten the Athletics on Tuesday. He threw 5.1 innings, allowed five hits and four walks, and struck out four. In his last seven appearances, he is 2-2 with a 2.77 ERA, 42 strikeouts and 16 walks, and he has allowed just one earned run in his last two home starts.
