Rangers Bullpen Implosion Sparks Urgent Closer Concern

Despite a thrilling opening win, the Texas Rangers' shaky ninth inning underscores their urgent need for a reliable closer.

The Texas Rangers kicked off their season with a nail-biting 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. While there was plenty to cheer about, especially from left-hander Jacob Latz and a solid bullpen, the game highlighted an ongoing concern: the need for a reliable closer.

The Rangers jumped to a 3-0 lead, thanks to a solo homer by Corey Seager and a two-run blast from Jake Burger. Heading into the bottom of the ninth, things looked promising. Jakob Junis had delivered two scoreless innings, and Robert Garcia was on the mound to seal the deal.

Garcia started strong, retiring the first two batters. However, Alec Bohm reached base with a soft single, and a walk to Edmundo Sosa followed. Manager Skip Schumaker then called on veteran Chris Martin to close it out.

In a twist of fate, a routine foul pop-up by Adolis García was dropped by Burger, giving the Phillies new life. García capitalized with an RBI double, and Brandon Marsh tied the game with a two-RBI single. The chaos was palpable, as what seemed like a certain win slipped away.

Despite the slip-up, the Rangers regained their footing in the 10th inning. Jhoan Duran's wild pitch and an RBI single from Andrew McCutchen put Texas back on top with a two-run lead.

Lefty Tyler Alexander was tasked with closing the game, and it was anything but smooth. After hitting Otto Kemp, he managed to get Trea Turner to pop out and struck out Kyle Schwarber.

Bryce Harper then delivered an RBI single, putting the Phillies in striking distance. But Alexander held his nerve, getting Bohm to pop out to Seager, clinching the win.

The victory underscored the Rangers' resilience, but also their Achilles' heel: closing games. Last season, Texas struggled in this department, converting only 37 of 66 save opportunities. While their offense has shown improvement, the absence of a seasoned closer remains a glaring issue.

If the Rangers aim to make a postseason push, addressing the bullpen could be crucial. A proven closer, like the Tigers' Kenley Jansen, might be the missing piece. As the trade deadline approaches, Chris Young and the Rangers' front office may need to explore options to bolster their relief corps.
