Nathaniel Lowe Stuns Fans with New Role on Reds' Opening Day Roster

Once a postseason struggler with the Rangers, Nathaniel Lowe seizes a new opportunity with the Cincinnati Reds, aiming for a promising comeback.

Reds Add Nathaniel Lowe to Opening Day Roster

The Cincinnati Reds have made a strategic move by selecting Nathaniel Lowe's contract, placing him on their Opening Day roster. Lowe, who previously showcased his talents with the Texas Rangers, is set to earn $1.75 million with the potential for $250,000 in incentives. This decision comes as Hunter Greene transitions to the 60-day IL following elbow surgery.

Lowe's journey has been quite the ride. After being acquired by the Rangers from the Tampa Bay Rays in December 2020, he spent four productive seasons in Texas.

Over that period, Lowe posted an impressive 11.2 bWAR with a .274/.359/.432 slash line, knocking out 78 homers and driving in 299 runs. Initially shaky on defense, Lowe turned things around in 2023 and 2024, recording 12 Outs Above Average (OAA).

His regular-season performance in 2023 was pivotal for the Rangers, as he contributed significantly to their playoff push.

However, Lowe's path took a turn when he was traded to the Washington Nationals in exchange for left-handed reliever Robert Garcia. While Garcia thrived with a 2.95 ERA over 64 innings for the Rangers, Lowe struggled in Washington. His performance dipped to a .216/.292/.373 slash line with 16 homers and 68 RBI, and his defense regressed to -5 OAA.

Following these struggles, Lowe was designated for assignment by the Nationals in August and released shortly after. The Boston Red Sox then picked him up, and he made the most of his 34-game stint, hitting .280/.370/.420 with two homers and 16 RBI. Despite these solid numbers, he was designated for assignment again in November.

Lowe's resilience shone through in spring training with the Reds. His impressive .289/.386/.632 line, featuring three home runs and four doubles, likely sealed his spot on the roster.

As the Reds gear up for the new season, Lowe's redemption arc is one to watch. His potential to impact the lineup could be a game-changer for Cincinnati.
