The Dallas Cowboys’ defense took a rough turn in Sunday’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals, and the damage may linger into Week 9.
Dallas had controlled the game defensively for most of the first 45 minutes before the wheels came off late in the fourth quarter. That collapse was bad enough on its own, but the Cowboys also came out of the game with several injury concerns, including two rookies who have become important pieces on that side of the ball.
Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. and rookie safety Caleb Downs both exited with injuries, and Monday’s update didn’t bring much comfort. Porter is still awaiting tests, so there isn’t much clarity there yet. Downs, meanwhile, is in concussion protocol, which puts his availability for next week in doubt.
The biggest concern may be rookie outside linebacker Malachi Lawrence. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said the injury Lawrence suffered was worse than the team first believed and that he could miss multiple weeks.
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said rookie OLB Malachi Lawrence could be out a few weeks with an ankle injury. TE Jake Ferguson has a chance to play Sunday despite his ankle injury.Rookie DB Caleb Downs is in concussion protocol.
Lawrence, the No. 23 overall pick out of UCF, had recently earned a spot in the starting lineup. Through eight games, he has 13 tackles and one sack.
Downs has been even more central to the defense. The No. 11 overall pick out of Ohio State has 52 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles in eight games, and Week 9 had extra meaning for him. The Cowboys travel to Indianapolis to face the Colts, the team that employs his older brother, Josh Downs.
Josh Downs enters Week 9 with 30 catches for 330 yards and a touchdown. He also recently requested a trade from Indianapolis. The Colts are 2-6 and have already made major moves, including firing general manager Chris Ballard and trading guard Quenton Nelson and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.
There have also been rumors about running back Jonathan Taylor, though for now Dallas is preparing to see him on the field along with Josh Downs. The problem is the Cowboys may have to do it with a defense missing several key names.
Dallas also announced that P.J. Locke is in concussion protocol. On a slightly better note, Jake Ferguson has a chance to play Sunday despite the ankle injury he suffered in Week 8.

Rangers May Avoid A Payroll Crunch But One Roster Problem Remains
The Rangers have spent the offseason trying to preserve some breathing room, and the early signs suggest they may not be staring at a payroll squeeze as sharply as some around the game expected. President of baseball operations Chris Young said the club has taken steps to keep its options open, including letting free agents walk rather than pushing deeper into the market and adding reliever Jose Butto off waivers as a low-cost bullpen piece.
Even so, the bigger roster picture is still unsettled. Texas has plenty of money already tied up on the books, and the uncertainty around the next MLB collective bargaining agreement only adds another layer of risk if the sport heads toward a lockout. The Rangers may have avoided one kind of crunch, but the challenge now is figuring out how to manage a roster with major long-term commitments while the rules and spending landscape around them remain in flux. Astros Manager Search Is Moving Fast Under Randy Flores
The Astros managerial search is moving quickly under new general manager Randy Flores, who now has full authority over baseball operations and wants to fill the job soon. Among the names already in the mix are Rangers bench coach Luis Urueta and Yankees bench coach Brad Ausmus, giving Houston a pair of familiar baseball lifers to evaluate as it sorts through its next direction.
There have also been other candidates in the conversation, including Albert Pujols, though it is not clear how far those discussions have gone. For the Rangers, Uruetas inclusion is a reminder that Houstons search is not happening in a vacuum, and that the Astros appear intent on moving decisively rather than letting the process drag into a longer public debate. Rangers Fans Just Got A Glimpse Of What Comes Next
The Rangers will have a strong presence at the Arizona Fall League Fall Stars Game, with four prospects and pitching coach Mason Milkey headed to the showcase as members of the Surprise Saguaros. It is the kind of mid-November spotlight that tends to matter more than the setting suggests, because the AFL often serves as a preview of the organizations next wave and a chance for young players to test themselves against some of the best talent in the minors.
Sebastian Walcott is the headliner in the group after a productive AFL run that only strengthened the buzz around his future, while Paxton Kling, Alejandro Chiquillo and Julian Brock give Texas a broader look at where the farm system stands. Milkeys inclusion adds another layer, too, since the Rangers will get a close-up view of how their pitching development is being represented in a high-profile environment, even if the bigger questions about who is closest to Arlington still have to wait a little longer.
