Braves Turn To Former All Star Amid Pitching Trouble

Veteran pitcher Martn Prez makes a promising return to the MLB stage with the Atlanta Braves, filling a crucial role amidst the team's pitching struggles.

Braves Add Veteran Arm Martín Pérez to the Roster

The Atlanta Braves have made a strategic move by adding seasoned left-hander Martín Pérez to their pitching lineup. This decision comes as right-hander Didier Fuentes is sent down to the minors to clear the way for the 34-year-old veteran.

For those familiar with the Texas Rangers, Pérez is a well-known figure. He broke into the major leagues with Texas back in 2012 and stayed with them until 2018. After stints with the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox, he found his way back to the Rangers for the 2021-22 offseason.

Pérez’s standout season came in 2022 when he earned an All-Star nod and delivered an impressive 5.1 bWAR with a 2.89 ERA over 196 1/3 innings. In 2023, his performance dipped slightly, posting a 4.45 ERA over 141 2/3 innings, including three postseason relief appearances.

The following year saw Pérez splitting time between the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres. His time with the Pirates was rocky, as he recorded a 5.20 ERA over 83 innings. However, he rebounded with the Padres, finishing the season with a solid 3.46 ERA over 52 innings.

Last season with the Chicago White Sox, Pérez maintained a 3.54 ERA across 56 innings but was limited due to a flexor strain.

Pérez’s Role with the Braves

Pérez joined the Braves on a minor-league contract during the offseason and impressed during spring training with a 2.84 ERA in 12 2/3 innings. The Braves’ pitching staff has been hit hard by injuries, sidelining key players like Spencer Scwellenbach, Spencer Strider, Hurston Waldrep, and Joey Wentz. This situation opens a door for Pérez to make a significant impact, whether as a starter or in long relief.

The Braves have yet to decide how they'll utilize Pérez, but his versatility could be invaluable given the current state of their roster. His experience and recent form suggest he could be a key piece in navigating the early challenges of the season.

As Pérez embarks on this new chapter with the Braves, he carries with him the hopes of continuing his career resurgence and providing stability to a pitching staff in need. His journey is one to watch, as his performance could be pivotal for Atlanta moving forward.
