Friday night’s meeting between Austin Westlake and Lake Travis brought together two programs that have spent years shaping one of the state’s most recognizable modern rivalries, and both entered the game with the District 25-6A race very much in the frame.
Westlake came in tied for first in the district with Round Rock Cedar Ridge, while Lake Travis shared third place with Round Rock. The backdrop is simple enough: first place was on the line, and both teams arrived with something to prove.
The Chaps entered at 6-1 overall and 3-0 in district play, with their only loss coming in a wild 49-40 shootout against Prosper on Sept. 11.
Since that setback, Westlake has looked nothing like a team searching for answers. The Chaps had ripped off four straight wins, and the margins told the story: victories by 43, 21, 57 and 64 points.
That latest hammer came last week in a 70-6 rout of Round Rock McNeil.
Lake Travis’ season has carried a different kind of edge. The Cavaliers’ program was struck before the season by the passing of one of their players, Odin Hensley, and they did not play until Week 1. When they finally took the field, they responded with an emotional 38-21 win over Pflugerville Weiss.
The Cavaliers have taken two losses, one against San Antonio Cornerstone in a non-district game and another in a one-point thriller, 35-34, against Cedar Ridge on Oct. 9. They steadied themselves last week with a 47-0 win over Round Rock Stony Point.
The game was played at Lake Travis ISD Stadium, with the rivalry renewed and both sides chasing the District 25-6A title.

Texas Must Face A Recruiting Miss At The Worst Time
Kewan Lacys path has become a familiar kind of recruiting reminder for Texas: a Dallas native who wanted to wear burnt orange, was viewed as a three-star prospect, and wound up finding his opportunity elsewhere. Instead of landing a scholarship offer from Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns, the running back at Ole Miss has turned into a productive piece of the Rebels offense, giving this matchup a little extra edge for Texas fans who know the local angle.
Now the timing could hardly be more awkward for Texas, which gets Ole Miss on Oct. 24 in a game set for ABC. The Longhorns are already dealing with injuries on defense, so facing a back like Lacy adds another layer to an assignment that was difficult enough on paper. For a team that missed on him once, the challenge now is trying to contain him when it matters most. [Read more 🡒]
Texas Heads Into Ole Miss Test With A Growing Availability Problem
Texas is heading into its Week 8 trip to Ole Miss with an availability picture that is starting to look more crowded than the coaching staff would like. Several important names are already listed out or doubtful, including edge rushers Colin Simmons and Richard Wesley along with running back Hollywood Smothers, leaving the Longhorns to sort through depth questions on both sides of the ball before a high-stakes SEC matchup.
Ole Miss has its own injury concerns, with multiple players on the report as well, including offensive linemen and defensive backs. Even so, Texas has more than enough reason to keep a close eye on its own list as the week unfolds, since the absences on defense and in the backfield could shape how the Longhorns handle one of their bigger tests of the season. Ole Miss Faces A Huge O-Line Question Against Texas
Patrick Kutas gave Ole Miss a timely lift against Missouri, and now the veteran lineman may be asked to carry even more of the load with Texas coming up next. The senior right guard was recognized as co-offensive lineman of the week after handling a sudden move to center when Brycen Sanders went down, a shift that underscored just how much the Rebels are leaning on his flexibility and experience up front.
Kutas is listed as probable on the injury report, but he was a full participant in practice and sounded like a player who understands what this matchup demands. He spoke during a press conference about the offensive lines preparation and the respect Ole Miss has for Texas, which makes his status worth watching as the Rebels sort through an important question in the middle of the line.
