San Antonio Showdown: Texas Track & Field Shines at UTSA Invitational

The Texas Track & Field team wrapped up a successful weekend at the UTSA Invitational, held at the Park West Athletics Complex, showcasing an impressive array of victories and top finishes.

Sprint Dominance

On the track, the Texas men's sprint squad was unstoppable. Jayden Jones kicked off his outdoor season with a bang, taking the 100 meters in 10.12 seconds.

But he wasn't done there; Jones led a clean sweep in the 200 meters, clocking 20.40 to secure the win. Teammates Kody Blackwood and John Rutledge followed closely, finishing in 20.49 and 20.71, respectively.

Chris Brinkley Jr. added to the sprint success with a second-place finish in the 400 meters, crossing the line in 47.43, while Neo Modibe secured sixth with a time of 48.47.

For the Longhorn women, Rejoice Sule was a standout performer, earning second-place finishes in both the 100 meters (11.17) and 200 meters (22.77).

Middle-Distance Mastery

In the middle-distance events, Texas continued to impress. Grace Kowalski led the women's 800 meters with a strong third-place finish, clocking in at 2:08.19.

The Longhorns showcased depth in this event, with five runners finishing in the top eight. The 1,500 meters saw Elizabeth Pickett and Sophie Atkinson deliver a powerful 1-2 punch, finishing in 4:22.34 and 4:25.22, respectively.

The men's distance team mirrored this success in the 1,500 meters, with Hudson Bennett and Aidan Torres taking the top two spots, posting times of 3:49.87 and 3:49.92. Sihle Mahlangu also delivered a solid performance, finishing second in the 800 meters with a time of 1:53.13.

Hurdles and Field Events

In hurdles action, Mia Mason led the women's side with a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking 13.93. On the men's side, Jonathan Hertwig-Odegaard claimed ninth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.53.

The field events brought more highlights for Texas. Sophia Kowalski soared to second place in the women's pole vault, clearing 3.95 meters (12-11.5). Sam Abati impressed in the men's pole vault, achieving a clearance of 4.95 meters (16-3), marking the fourth-best result of the meet.

In the high jump, Osawese Agbonkonkon and Brandon Gorski secured second and third places in the men's competition with jumps of 2.10 meters (6-10.75) and 2.05 meters (6-8.75), respectively. Caroline Peterson tied for fourth in the women's high jump with a leap of 1.70 meters (5-7), while Iana Ahetz-Etcheber tied for 12th at 1.60 meters (5-3).

Overall, Texas Track & Field's performance at the UTSA Invitational was a testament to their depth and talent, setting a high bar for the season ahead.
