Texas Suddenly Faces A Very Different Florida Quarterback Challenge

Florida's switch to quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. could redefine the dynamics of their upcoming clash with Texas.

The Florida quarterback situation is giving Texas a little extra to sort through before Saturday’s home game, but the overall picture still points to a favorable matchup for the Longhorns’ defense.

Aaron Philo, who injured his shoulder in last week’s loss to South Carolina, is listed as questionable on the SEC availability report and is expected to be a game-time decision. Even so, Florida is expected to go with Tramell Jones Jr. at quarterback against Texas, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.

Jones, a four-star composite prospect in the 2025 recruiting class, is in his second year at Florida after the Gators originally recruited him under head coach Billy Napier. His offer sheet wasn’t loaded with the same kind of blue-chip attention some other quarterbacks get, with Miami, Florida State, Louisville, Pitt, Virginia Tech, Maryland and Georgia Tech among the schools that offered him.

For Texas, the matchup looks manageable on paper. Jones has played in seven games over two seasons and has completed 44 of 64 passes for 443 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.

Most of that came in mop-up work, though he did flash briefly with a 42-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of the blowout loss to Missouri two weeks ago. His best outing as a Gator came last season against Long Island, when he finished 12 of 18 for 131 yards and two touchdowns.

The bigger selling point for Texas is what Jones does not bring. He is not viewed as a major running threat, with just 13 carries for 35 yards in seven career games. And he still has not shown that he can consistently beat defenses with high-level throws down the field.

That gives Texas some flexibility up front. Colin Simmons and Lance Jackson can come after Jones off the edge without the same concern that came against Tennessee, where Simmons often had spy duty on Faizon Brandon and still piled up a career-high 5.5 sacks.

The formula for Texas is clear: apply pressure, force Jones to speed up his decisions and try to create mistakes. Even more important, the Longhorns will want to bottle up Florida running back Jadan Baugh early, so Jones has to carry more of the load through the air.

Texas May Be Getting A Very Different Florida Offense Than Expected

Floridas quarterback situation is suddenly a major subplot for the Longhorns, with Aaron Philo trending toward sitting out the upcoming game because of a shoulder injury. If he cannot go, Texas would be preparing for a different look entirely, with sophomore Tramell Jones lined up to make his first career start in a game that already carries plenty of weight for both teams.

Jones was a four-star recruit and has flashed efficiency in limited action this season, enough to draw praise from head coach Jon Sumrall as a potential starting quarterback. For Texas, that means the film and the plan may need a late adjustment, because the offense coming to Austin could be shaped as much by inexperience as by the usual Florida personnel. [Read more 🡒]

Texas Suddenly Has A Colin Simmons Problem Fans Will Fear

Colin Simmons gave Texas everything it could want from its star edge rusher before the game turned sideways against Florida. He had already piled up eight tackles, four tackles for loss and a sack when he went down with a lower-body injury early in the fourth quarter, a sequence that immediately changed the feel of the Longhorns defense.

Simmons was taken off the field for further examination, and Texas felt the effect almost right away as Florida moved ahead on a field goal while he was out. For a defense built around his disruption, the bigger concern now is how much time the Longhorns may have to manage without the player who had been driving their pass rush all game. [Read more 🡒]

Texas May Have A Colin Simmons Problem They Can't Afford

Texas got a scare in the fourth quarter against Florida when Colin Simmons, its star pass rusher and the nations sack leader, went down with an apparent leg injury. He was helped off the field and taken for further evaluation, leaving the Longhorns with an immediate concern about one of the most important players on their defense.

Simmons has been central to everything Texas wants to do up front, giving the Longhorns the kind of edge pressure that can change a game in a hurry. Any absence would put extra pressure on a defense that leans on him to disrupt opposing quarterbacks, and it adds another layer of urgency as Texas waits to learn more about the extent of the injury.
