Texas Holds Off Auburn's Late Surge for Thrilling Victory
In a high-stakes showdown at Plainsman Park, the No. 2 Texas Longhorns edged out the No.
5 Auburn Tigers with a nail-biting 7-6 victory. The game, witnessed by a record-setting crowd of 8,037, showcased Texas' ability to withstand pressure and secure a crucial road win.
The Longhorns (19-3, 3-2 SEC) built a commanding six-run lead early on, marking their first road triumph over a top-5 team in the regular season since their 2021 victory against No. 3 TCU. Auburn (19-3, 4-1 SEC), riding a 12-game winning streak, pushed back fiercely but fell just short.
Texas closer Thomas Burns was the hero of the night, keeping his cool under pressure. In the ninth inning, with the bases loaded and two outs, Burns induced a ground out to end Auburn's comeback hopes. He had already showcased his mettle in the eighth, striking out Ethin Bingaman and stranding two runners in scoring position.
The Longhorns' offensive fireworks began with a bang. Center fielder Aiden Robbins set the tone with a 109-mph home run off the batter's eye, his third in five at-bats. The momentum continued as right fielder Jayden Duplantier, in his 126th career at-bat, launched his first career homer-a three-run blast over the towering left-field wall.
Designated hitter Maddox Monsour also shined, delivering a crucial two-run single earlier in the game and finishing with three hits in his first SEC start. Texas catcher Carson Tinney added to the lead with a sixth-inning RBI double, which ultimately proved decisive.
Texas starter Harrison, now 3-0, was solid on the mound, allowing two runs on four hits over 5 2/3 innings and striking out six. He navigated through a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and then retired nine straight batters, setting the stage for Texas' offensive surge.
Auburn didn't go quietly, chipping away at the lead with runs in the fourth and a strong rally in the late innings. However, Texas' early offensive burst and Burns' clutch pitching sealed the deal, evening the series and showcasing the Longhorns' resilience on the road.
