Texas Still Has One Frustrating Question After That Gators Field Incident

Despite banning the disruptive fan, Texas AD Chris Del Conte faces ongoing criticism for how his department handled the incident following the Longhorns' loss to the Florida Gators.

Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte is taking heat even after moving quickly to punish the fan who flipped off Florida players on the field.

The incident came in the aftermath of Texas’ upset loss to the Gators, the Longhorns’ second straight defeat to an unranked opponent. A fan was caught walking around the field and filming his own behavior while making the gesture toward Florida players, and the reaction was immediate once the clips spread.

A few days later, Del Conte told the Houston Chronicle that the fan had been "identified and permanently banned" from Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, according to HC reporter Kirk Bohls.

Bohls reported that the fan is not a University of Texas student, but attends a school in the state of Florida that is not the Gators' University of Florida. Del Conte reportedly also said he did not know who allowed the fan to have access to the field.

"Chris Del Conte told the Houston Chronicle the Texas fan who flipped off a Gators player was a local college student who attends a school in Florida (but not Florida). He has been identified and permanently banned from DKR. CDC said he doesn't know who authorized a field pass for…

Even though the ban was the obvious step for Texas, plenty of fans were still frustrated that Del Conte did not identify the person who gave the fan the on-field pass. Some argued that the real blame belonged to whoever opened the door in the first place.

"Find out who gave him a field pass! That's who should be banned," one person responded to Bohls' report on X.

For now, Del Conte appears set on sticking with the ban for the fan alone, but the criticism around the field-pass issue is not fading.

The bigger picture, though, is that this kind of disrespect is hardly new in college football. Alabama dealt with a similar episode this season when a fan hit the helmet and shoved Georgia linebacker Raylen Wilson, leading to a ban from Alabama’s stadium.

Texas has seen its own crowd cross the line before, too. As recently as a year ago, Longhorn fans threw water bottles and other debris onto the field during a game against Georgia after disagreeing with an officials’ call.

The common thread is not necessarily that these incidents are suddenly happening more often. What has changed is how quickly they get clipped, posted and blown up across social media.

Del Conte may still need to do more than simply ban the fan who taunted Florida players, but the episode does not appear to be proof that college football fandom has taken a dramatic moral nosedive on this front.

Texas Defense Has A New Problem Fans Wont Like

Texas slide in the AP poll has been bad enough on its own, but the bigger concern for Longhorns fans is how opponents are finding answers against that defense. The losses to unranked teams, including the home setback against Florida, have put plenty of pressure on a unit that was supposed to be a strength, and the tape is not making the picture any prettier.

Florida offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner helped back up quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. with boot-action looks that kept Texas off balance, while the Gators run game and play-action game opened up room the Longhorns struggled to close. For Texas, the issue is no longer just a bad result or two. It is the way teams are creating easy, repeatable stress points, and that is the kind of problem that tends to linger until it gets fixed. Texas May Be Missing Its Biggest Defensive Difference Maker

Texas is likely to be without one of its most disruptive defenders when Ole Miss comes to Austin, as edge rusher Colin Simmons has been listed as doubtful because of the right-leg injury he picked up against Florida. Steve Sarkisian confirmed Simmons hurt his right knee, and the early read on the injury points to a high-ankle sprain that could keep him sidelined for the next few weeks.

That is a significant hit for a Longhorns defense that has leaned on Simmons' ability to change games off the edge. He already sits third on Texas' all-time sack leaderboard and had been chasing the program's single-season sack record, which makes his absence more than just a lineup tweak as the Longhorns prepare for a key SEC matchup. Texas Gets Its First Real Test Of Sean Millers New-Look Roster

Texas will get its first public look at Sean Millers new roster when the Longhorns face St. Johns in an exhibition at Madison Square Garden. After a pair of closed scrimmages, this will be the programs first chance to show its progress in front of fans, and it comes with a group that looks very different from a year ago, with 11 newcomers on the roster.

For Miller and his players, the matchup is more than a tune-up. It is the first real measuring stick for how quickly the pieces are coming together before the regular season begins, and it arrives in a building that adds a little extra weight to the moment. The Longhorns have talked about the challenge and the significance of the game, but the more revealing part may be how much they can answer when the lights come on. [Read more 🡒]
