Austin, Texas - The Lone Star Showdown: A Texas Triumph

In a thrilling display at McCombs Field, No. 1 Texas Softball clinched the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown with a nail-biting 3-2 victory over No.

15 Texas A&M. This win followed a high-scoring 9-8 opener on Friday night, showcasing Texas' resilience and skill.

The post-game celebrations were doubly sweet for Texas seniors Reese Atwood and Leighann Goode, who received "golden tickets" from the Athletes Unlimited Professional Softball league. This marks their official entry into the AUSL College Draft pool, a testament to their outstanding performances and potential at the next level.

With this victory, Texas extends its remarkable season record to 31-1, remaining undefeated in Southeastern Conference play at 8-0, and an impeccable 16-0 at home. The team is riding a wave of momentum with a national-best 29-game win streak, including an 11-1 record against ranked opponents.

Reese Atwood was a standout performer, both offensively and defensively. She went 2-for-3 at the plate, driving in two runs with a solo home run and a single. Behind the plate, Atwood's defensive prowess was on full display as she thwarted two base-stealing attempts and executed a no-look pickoff at third base.

Senior shortstop Viviana Martinez contributed with an RBI single in the first inning, setting the tone for Texas. Junior center fielder Kayden Henry and freshman pitcher/designated player Hannah Wells also added to the hit tally.

Hannah Wells, a freshman right-hander, earned the win with a solid 5.2 innings of work, allowing just two runs on seven hits and striking out three. Despite some challenges with control, issuing three walks and hitting two batters, Wells showcased maturity beyond her years. Junior RHP Teagan Kavan secured her second save of the season, retiring all four batters she faced in a flawless relief appearance.

Texas A&M initially took the lead with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. However, Texas quickly responded with back-to-back RBI singles from Martinez and Atwood, taking a 2-1 lead. A&M managed to tie the game at 2-2 in the third, but Atwood's solo shot in the bottom of the inning sealed the deal for Texas.

The series finale between these two rivals is set for 1 p.m. CT on Sunday, with the game broadcast on ESPN. Fans can look forward to more exciting action with Matt Schumacker and Amanda Scarborough calling the play-by-play.
