Texas Must Reshuffle Its Frontcourt Before The Preseason Even Starts

As Texas gears up for the season, the loss of senior forward Jada Bediako to a devastating Achilles injury forces the Longhorns to recalibrate their strategy and player dynamics.

Texas women’s basketball will have to open the season without one of its veteran frontcourt additions.

Transfer senior forward Jada Bediako suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon injury, according to a Texas Athletics spokesperson. She is scheduled to have surgery on Thursday, the statement said.

The timing is rough for the Longhorns, who are less than a week away from their first exhibition game against UConn on Oct. 19 and about three weeks from their regular-season opener against Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 4.

Bediako arrived in Austin in the offseason after two years at Marquette, following her freshman season at Georgia Tech. Last season, she averaged 2.6 points and 2.2 rebounds in 26 games.

The injury doesn’t necessarily close the door on her Texas career for good. Because of the NCAA’s new 5-for-5 rule, Bediako could return for a fifth season next year.

Head coach Vic Schaefer had viewed Bediako as a stabilizing veteran voice for freshmen Isi Etute and Brihanna Crittendon, even if she wasn’t projected to jump in as a starter right away. Now, that guidance will have to come from the sideline.

Her absence leaves more on the shoulders of senior forward Breya Cunningham and junior center Lovisa Asbrink Hose, two players who will now be asked to anchor the frontcourt.

For a Texas roster already loaded with new and young pieces, losing an experienced upperclassman for the full season adds another obstacle for Schaefer to manage. And with UConn up next on Oct. 19, the Longhorns will already need to rethink preseason lineups and plans without Bediako in the mix.

Texas Has A Discipline Problem Sarkisian Can't Ignore

Penalties again hovered over Texas in a loss to Oklahoma, where the Longhorns were flagged eight times for 61 yards and watched several drives get undercut by avoidable mistakes. For a team trying to play cleaner in big moments, it was the kind of game that reminded everyone how much small errors can shape a rivalry result.

Steve Sarkisian said the discipline issues remain the biggest thing Texas has to fix, and the frustrating part is that they have not all come from the same place. Some have been effort plays, others simple mental lapses, and even with fewer penalties per game than last season, the Longhorns are still giving away too much in situations where every snap matters. Loreal Sarkisian Gave Texas Fans A Rare Bright Spot Saturday

Even in a loss that stung, one of the more memorable scenes from Saturdays Red River Rivalry came from the sideline stands. Loreal Sarkisian showed up at the Cotton Bowl in a couture cowgirl look that drew plenty of attention and even earned a mention during ESPNs broadcast, giving Texas fans a rare bit of lighter conversation on a day when the football result went the wrong way.

The Longhorns fell to Oklahoma for their first loss of the 2026 season, which made the fashion moment stand out even more against the backdrop of disappointment. Loreal and Steve Sarkisian reportedly reconciled after filing for divorce in July 2024, and the couple welcomed a son in April 2025, adding another layer of personal interest to a storyline that had Longhorns fans talking for reasons beyond the scoreboard. Texas Fans Just Got An Early Look At Sean Millers New Rotation

Texas basketball gave its fans a first real glimpse of what Sean Millers group could look like this fall, even if the practice gym atmosphere kept plenty of the detail behind closed doors. The Longhorns hosted Arizona State in a scrimmage at the Moody Center as part of their preparation for Millers first season, and the school later shared highlights that offered an early peek at the mix of freshmen and transfers in the rotation.

For a roster still taking shape, the clip package was the kind of small window that can fuel a lot of curiosity this time of year. Texas also has its full 2026-27 schedule mapped out already, with the upcoming slate including nonconference games and tournament stops that will eventually show how quickly Millers lineup can come together once the real games begin.
