When Texas and Ohio State meet Saturday night, the quarterback showdown between Arch Manning and Julian Sayin will grab the spotlight. But the game is likely to tilt on the battles around them - the trench work, the coverage matchups, and which side can keep its passing game on schedule long enough to hit its playmakers.
Start with Texas left tackle Trevor Goosby and Ohio State edge rusher Kenyatta Jackson Jr. Last season, Goosby came into the Week 1 meeting with the Buckeyes dealing with a reportedly injured hand from the Longhorns’ second fall camp scrimmage, and Ohio State’s pass rush made the most of it.
Manning was hit with 15 pressures that day. This time, Goosby is managing a bone bruise on his knee from August, though he was healthy enough to play most of three quarters in Texas’s 59-7 win over Texas State.
He’ll have his hands full with Jackson, who posted three tackles and led the nation with eight pressures in Week 1. If Texas wants Manning clean in the pocket, Goosby has to hold up.
If he can’t, Andre Cojoe may be forced into more action, and while he’s talented, he’s still raw. Cojoe has 51 career snaps, with 18 of them coming against Texas State last weekend.
The other edge battle is just as sharp: Texas pass rusher Colin Simmons against Ohio State’s new starting left tackle, Ian Moore. That one might matter even more, because Sayin doesn’t bring the same mobility Manning does.
Will Muschamp has been moving Simmons around, using him as a seven-tech, five-tech, outside linebacker and even an off-ball linebacker against Texas State. Simmons was quieter than usual in that game, but that could be exactly the kind of look that lulls Moore into the biggest test of his short time as a starter.
Out wide, Ohio State’s Matt Patricia and Tim Walton will be focused on limiting Coleman and Ryan Wingo after the duo combined for 191 yards and three touchdown receptions in Week 1. If Manning chooses to work the middle instead, Texas may need more from its slot group.
The Longhorns’ slot receivers had only five catches against Texas State, but Emmett Mosley V stands out as Manning’s most proven option inside. He’ll line up against Ohio State freshman nickel Jay Timmons, who turned heads during fall camp and is about to face the first major test of his college career.
That matchup could become even more important if Hollywood Smothers keeps drawing extra linebacker attention. If that happens, it could open the hook-and-curl areas for Mosley to do damage. In a game loaded with star power at quarterback, these are the individual battles that will decide whether Texas or Ohio State walks away with control on Saturday night.
