Texas May Be Missing Its Biggest Defensive Difference Maker

The Longhorns might face Ole Miss without star edge rusher Colin Simmons, as doubts about his availability loom due to a significant leg injury.

Texas may be heading into Saturday’s showdown with Ole Miss without its top defensive weapon.

Edge rusher Colin Simmons is listed as doubtful on Texas’ first injury report ahead of the SEC matchup at Royal-Memorial Stadium. That lines up with what happened late in last week’s 27-24 loss to Florida, when Simmons left early in the fourth quarter with a right-leg injury and never returned.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said Saturday he thought Simmons had injured his right knee against Florida, though he didn’t know how serious it was. Sarkisian did not offer any additional detail Monday, but Orangeblood’s Anwar Richardson reported Simmons is expected to miss three-to-four weeks with a high-ankle sprain.

The timing is a rough blow for a Texas defense that will be tasked with slowing down what is being billed as perhaps college football’s best quarterback in Ole Miss’ Trinidad Chambliss.

Simmons’ absence also interrupts a season in which he has kept climbing the Texas record book. He pushed his career sack total to 31 1/2 against Florida, which moved him to No. 3 on the school’s all-time list and left him nine sacks shy of Kiki DeAyala’s program mark of 40.5.

He’s also tracking DeAyala in another race. Simmons finished the weekend with 10 1/2 sacks in 2026, putting him 12 behind DeAyala’s single-season Texas record of 22 1/2, set in 1982.

Against Florida, Simmons had 7 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 1 sack and 2 quarterback hits before going down early in the fourth quarter. Texas couldn’t close it out after he left.

Texas Still Has One Frustrating Question After That Gators Field Incident

Texas had plenty to feel good about after the Florida game, but one awkward postgame scene has lingered. A fan was identified and permanently banned from Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium after he flipped off Gators players on the field, a move that quickly pulled the spotlight away from the scoreboard and onto how a spectator ended up in that spot in the first place.

Athletic director Chris Del Conte said the fan is a local college student attending a Florida school other than the University of Florida, but he also said he does not know who authorized the field access. That unanswered question has become the one many Texas fans keep circling back to, because the ban closes one door while leaving the bigger issue of how the situation was allowed to happen very much open. Texas Defense Has A New Problem Fans Wont Like

Texas slide in the AP poll has been bad enough on its own, but the bigger concern for Longhorns fans is how opponents are finding answers against that defense. The losses to unranked teams, including the home setback against Florida, have put plenty of pressure on a unit that was supposed to be a strength, and the tape is not making the picture any prettier.

Florida offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner helped back up quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. with boot-action looks that kept Texas off balance, while the Gators run game and play-action game opened up room the Longhorns struggled to close. For Texas, the issue is no longer just a bad result or two. It is the way teams are creating easy, repeatable stress points, and that is the kind of problem that tends to linger until it gets fixed. Texas Gets Its First Real Test Of Sean Millers New-Look Roster

Texas will get its first public look at Sean Millers new roster when the Longhorns face St. Johns in an exhibition at Madison Square Garden. After a pair of closed scrimmages, this will be the programs first chance to show its progress in front of fans, and it comes with a group that looks very different from a year ago, with 11 newcomers on the roster.

For Miller and his players, the matchup is more than a tune-up. It is the first real measuring stick for how quickly the pieces are coming together before the regular season begins, and it arrives in a building that adds a little extra weight to the moment. The Longhorns have talked about the challenge and the significance of the game, but the more revealing part may be how much they can answer when the lights come on. [Read more 🡒]
