The Texas Longhorns still have work to do on their 2027 recruiting class, but the biggest battle right now is not adding another name. It is keeping the one they already have.
Five-star wide receiver Easton Royal remains committed to Texas after announcing his verbal pledge last November, yet the pressure around that commitment keeps building. Royal, now ranked as the No. 1 wideout in the class, has drawn serious attention from LSU and Florida, two programs that have been trying to pull him away from the Longhorns for months. Rivals has even logged a recruiting prediction for LSU to land him, though no flip has happened yet.
The money being discussed is significant. Reports from Rivals say LSU and Florida are prepared to go as high as $1.5 million in an effort to change Royal’s mind. For a player with Royal’s standing, that figure fits the market.
Texas now faces a clear decision. The Longhorns can match the offer and hold onto Royal, or they can let him go and pivot elsewhere, possibly toward Indiana commit Monshun Sales. Either path would require a firm response from the staff.
What Texas cannot afford is a collapse on both fronts: losing Royal and failing to land another top receiver. That would leave the class thinner at a spot where the Longhorns want elite talent. It would also mean another five-star departure from the group after No. 1 cornerback John Meredith III reclassified to 2026 so he can join the roster this upcoming season.
Outside of Royal, Texas currently has commitments from just two other wide receivers in the class: four-star Briceson Thrower Jr. and three-star Kyron Brown. Both are solid additions, but the Longhorns are clearly aiming higher than simply filling spots. If they want to stay where they believe they belong at the top of college football, keeping the best players is part of the job.
For now, this recruitment looks like it will keep stretching into the 2026 season as Royal continues to weigh what Texas, LSU and Florida do next. More visits could still be coming in a process that already feels endless.
