Florida’s quarterback picture is leaning in one direction ahead of Saturday’s trip to Texas, and that points to Tramell Jones.
Aaron Philo was listed as questionable on Thursday and expected to be a game-time decision, but a Friday ESPN report said he is trending toward sitting out because of the shoulder injury he suffered last weekend. If that happens, Jones will make the first start of his career against the Longhorns in Austin.
Jones is a sophomore from Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin who played high school football alongside former Texas receiver Jaime Ffrench.
His recruiting path was a winding one: he picked Florida over eight other offers, including Georgia Tech, Louisville, Maryland, Miami, Pitt and Virginia Tech, after once giving an early pledge to Florida State during the summer after his sophomore year. When the Seminoles struggled, he took an official visit to Florida in November 2024 and flipped to the Gators two days later.
A consensus four-star prospect, Jones finished as the No. 245 player nationally and the No. 21 quarterback in the 247Sports Composite rankings. 247Sports described him this way:
“Experienced pocket passer with no shortage of arm talent that had his senior campaign cut short due to a lower-leg injury. Impressed time and time again at offseason events with his accuracy and mechanics as he peppered all three levels of the field with precision.
At his best when he can stay on schedule and feed his playmakers as he makes anticipatory throws and wins with ball placement. Not the most creative scrambler and tends to panic when the rush starts to build, which in turn can lead to paralyzing sacks.
Must also cut down on the interceptions. Exits high school with a 22-13 record after earning a starting gig as a freshman in one of the Sunshine State’s top classifications.
Showed year-over-year improvement in key statistical categories and is viewed as a quick study. Might lack elite physical traits compared to some of the other signal callers in the 2025 cycle, but has what it takes to emerge as a trusted distributor on Saturdays.”
The 6-foot, 196-pound quarterback played in two games last season before the coaching change, which also brought in offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech. Jones and Philo battled through the offseason, and head coach Jon Sumrall settled the competition during preseason camp by naming Philo the starter.
Jones has done his part efficiently in limited action this year. He has completed 23 of 29 passes for 252 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, with one turnover-worthy throw, according to Pro Football Focus.
Against Missouri, he pushed the ball downfield more aggressively, posting an average depth of target of 11.2 yards and averaging 17.2 yards per attempt while completing all five of his throws. In the lopsided loss to South Carolina, his approach was much more conservative: 6 of 8 for 40 yards with an interception and an average depth of target of 3.9 yards.
“I want to make sure we continue growing because I believe in Tramell,“ Sumrall said. ”I’ve said this publicly - I think Tramell can be our starting quarterback here, and we can win football games.”

Texas Suddenly Has A Colin Simmons Problem Fans Will Fear
Colin Simmons gave Texas everything it could want from its star edge rusher before the game turned sideways against Florida. He had already piled up eight tackles, four tackles for loss and a sack when he went down with a lower-body injury early in the fourth quarter, a sequence that immediately changed the feel of the Longhorns defense.
Simmons was taken off the field for further examination, and Texas felt the effect almost right away as Florida moved ahead on a field goal while he was out. For a defense built around his disruption, the bigger concern now is how much time the Longhorns may have to manage without the player who had been driving their pass rush all game. [Read more 🡒]
Texas May Have A Colin Simmons Problem They Can't Afford
Texas got a scare in the fourth quarter against Florida when Colin Simmons, its star pass rusher and the nations sack leader, went down with an apparent leg injury. He was helped off the field and taken for further evaluation, leaving the Longhorns with an immediate concern about one of the most important players on their defense.
Simmons has been central to everything Texas wants to do up front, giving the Longhorns the kind of edge pressure that can change a game in a hurry. Any absence would put extra pressure on a defense that leans on him to disrupt opposing quarterbacks, and it adds another layer of urgency as Texas waits to learn more about the extent of the injury. Texas Volleyball Keeps Sending A Clear Message Before Florida
Texas kept its home floor spotless again, handling Auburn in straight sets and showing the kind of balance that has made the Longhorns tough to push around early in the season. The set scores were tight at first, 25-22, 25-22, before Texas closed with more control in a 25-18 finish, and Torrey Stafford led the way with 21 kills while filling up the stat sheet in other ways.
It was the kind of performance that reinforces the message Texas has been sending in Austin, where the Longhorns are now 5-0 at home. With Florida up next, this was another chance for Texas to sharpen its edge and keep building momentum, especially with Stafford giving the offense a steady top-end threat and the rest of the group holding up around her.
