Texas Makes Final Push To Keep 5-Star Easton Royal Committed

As five-star recruit Easton Royal contemplates a switch to SEC programs, Texas launches a last-ditch effort to solidify his commitment.

Texas is making one last push to keep five-star wide receiver Easton Royal in the Longhorns’ class, and the timing says plenty about how serious this has become.

Royal, who committed to Texas about a year ago, has kept the recruiting world buzzing with continued interest from other programs, especially SEC schools. The latest twist is that head coach Steve Sarkisian and wide receivers coach Chris Jackson are scheduled to be in Louisiana to check on him, a move that amounts to a full-on Hail Mary from Texas as the finish line for his decision gets closer.

“I’m very close to a decision,” Royal recently told recruiting insider Sam Spiegelman, a comment that suggests the long-running saga may be nearing its end.

Recruiting insider Justin Wells told InsideTexas’s Cord Samuels, “They're going to be in Baton Rouge tomorrow to go see Easton Royal, that's been planned, Chris Jackson wants to go check in on his five-star,”

That visit matters because Royal has spent months taking trips to other schools, with Florida and LSU drawing the most attention. Those visits have naturally left Texas on edge, especially with Royal praising other programs even after attending the Horns’ comeback win over then-No. 1 Ohio State.

Still, Texas is clearly trying to leave nothing on the table. Sarkisian and Jackson are using one of the team’s only off weekends to make the trip and meet with Royal at home, and that could carry real weight.

The numbers, though, make Texas the underdog in this fight. According to Rivals and On3, the Longhorns had just a 2.2% chance to keep Royal committed, though that figure came before the home visit was made official. LSU has been given more than 91% odds to keep him home, while Florida has a 1.5% shot to pull off the flip.

Royal remains the top receiver in the cycle and ranks No. 5 overall. Both Rivals and 247Sports rate him as a 98-overall recruit. As a junior, he played 13 games and finished with 54 catches, 1,065 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns.

He is also the highest-rated player in Texas’s class of 2027, which helps explain why Sarkisian and Jackson are still fighting this hard to keep him in the fold. For now, Texas is doing everything it can to make sure Royal stays with the Horns.

Texas Fans Just Got Another Reminder About Landen Williams-Callis

Landen Williams-Callis keeps finding ways to remind Texas why it was so important to land him. The five-star running back commit delivered another eye-opening night for Randle High School, piling up 327 rushing yards and five touchdowns in a lopsided win over South Houston while head coach Steve Sarkisian and running backs coach Jabbar Juluke watched from the stands.

Williams-Callis also showed off the kind of all-purpose ability that makes him such a tough cover, tossing a 26-yard touchdown pass in the 78-0 rout. He has been productive all season as well, with 1,166 rushing yards and 17 rushing touchdowns plus more yardage through the air and in the passing game, a reminder that Texas is getting more than just a traditional runner. Arch Manning Is Driving A Texas Debate Fans Wont Ignore

Arch Mannings first month has been good enough to keep Texas squarely in the conversation, and it has also reopened an old question around his future. Through four games, he has completed 63.5% of his passes for 862 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions, a solid line that still leaves plenty of room for the sort of growth that made him one of the most watched players in the country.

The debate only gets louder from there. ESPNs Josh Pate recently slotted Manning ninth among SEC starting quarterbacks, a ranking that will not sit well with everyone in Austin, and it comes as Robert Griffin III and Todd McShay have both floated the idea that Manning could benefit from another season at Texas. For Longhorns fans, that kind of conversation is less about one early-season ranking than it is about what Manning might look like when his time in Austin is finally ready to close. [Read more 🡒]

Texas Bye Week Changes The Feel Of A Huge Rivalry Game

Texas has earned a little breathing room in the middle of a fast-moving season, and the timing matters. The No. 1 Longhorns are riding a four-game winning streak after a strong defensive showing in their win over Tennessee, and the bye week gives them a chance to reset without losing the momentum that has carried them into the middle of October.

The pause also changes the feel of what comes next, because the next time Texas takes the field it will be for one of the sports biggest games of the year. With the Cotton Bowl still ahead and the Oklahoma rivalry waiting on the other side of the break, this is the kind of week that can sharpen focus as much as legs, and the attention around the matchup will only keep building.
