Texas Longhorns Face Spring Challenges with Key Players Sidelined
In Austin, the Texas Longhorns are navigating spring football with some notable absences. Sophomore receiver Kaliq Lockett and freshman offensive lineman Kaden Scherer are both sidelined following surgeries for lower leg injuries.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed that both players will miss the remainder of spring practice, but the surgeries were successful. Lockett is expected to return for summer workouts, while Scherer aims for a fall comeback.
The Longhorns are no strangers to the injury bug this offseason. Several players, including quarterback Arch Manning, have undergone surgeries.
Manning, dealing with a foot injury, is already back to throwing, and Sarkisian is easing him into practice. This approach allows backup quarterbacks KJ Lacey, Dia Bell, and MJ Morris to gain valuable reps.
Others like LT Trevor Goosby and LB Ty'Anthony Smith are gradually returning to practice, donning pads but not yet participating fully. Sophomore defensive lineman Justus Terry is following a similar path as he recovers from a shoulder injury.
Dual-sport athlete Jonah Williams, who plays safety for the football team and outfield for the baseball team, is also on the mend after shoulder surgery. While his baseball season is cut short, Williams remains engaged with both teams through meetings and rehab.
The Longhorns' defense is undergoing a transformation under new coordinator Will Muschamp. This spring is pivotal as the team adapts to Muschamp’s new scheme, with Sarkisian testing players' retention of the new strategies.
In a significant roster development, Western Kentucky transfer Laurence Seymore has been granted an NCAA extension waiver. Seymore, an experienced offensive guard, will join Texas in June, bringing much-needed depth and maturity to the offensive line. Sarkisian emphasized the importance of building experience up front, highlighting Seymore’s physicality and presence as key assets.
As the Longhorns work through these spring challenges, the focus remains on building a resilient and experienced team ready to compete at the highest level.
