Texas Just Lost A Painful Recruiting Battle Fans Saw Coming

Deck: Discover the reasons behind Karnell "Greedy" James' surprising switch from Texas to LSU, as connections and culture take precedence in his decision.

Karnell “Greedy” James has given Texas a clearer picture of why his recruitment ended with a flip to LSU, and the answer starts with culture, coaching, and home.

The four-star defensive back officially moved his commitment from Texas to LSU on Thursday, ending a battle that stayed close until the finish. James said the Tigers checked the biggest boxes for him, from the people around the program to the feeling he got in Baton Rouge.

“It has been a really tight race and it was a hard decision. I couldn't go wrong with any of those schools,” James told Rivals.

“What mattered to me most was being where I wanted to be the most. At LSU, I loved the culture on and off the field.

They have a great coaching staff and they feel like father figures, especially Coach Raymond. He's one of the best in the game.”

For Texas, that stings because the Longhorns were in early and stayed involved all the way through. They offered the Manvel standout in June 2025 and later landed his commitment that December, only for LSU to keep pushing and eventually win the fight.

Corey Raymond played a major role in that late swing. James said the LSU defensive backs coach laid out a plan that made sense to him, especially with how he could be used in the secondary.

“It has been really real with me how he sees me at corner, playing a lot of safety, how he can develop me, and how I just need to get in his hands,” James said.

There was also a personal pull that LSU simply couldn’t ignore. James was born in New Orleans, still has family there, and grew up rooting for the Tigers.

“All my family and I grew up LSU fans,” James continued. “It's cool that they can watch me there.”

James is rated the No. 319 overall prospect in the 2027 recruiting class and the No. 47 player in Texas, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings.

Karnell James LSU Flip Could Be Just The Start For Texas

Karnell Greedy James move from Texas to LSU was already a notable hit on the Longhorns 2027 recruiting board, but the ripple effect may be even more important than the flip itself. The four-star defensive back had been committed to Texas before changing course, and now he is not just wearing LSU colors on the trail, he is helping the Tigers work other targets while the class is still taking shape.

One of the names in that orbit is Easton Royal, the Texas five-star wide receiver commit who is weighing his options among Texas, LSU and Florida. Royal has acknowledged James switch and reposted the news on social media, a small but telling sign that the recruitment is still very much alive and that Texas may have more to worry about here than one lost defensive back. Texas Suddenly Have Real Pressure In Fight For Elite In-State Recruit

The race for Marcus Spears Jr. has taken on a more urgent feel for Texas after Kentucky coach Mark Pope made the 2027 top-ranked recruit a priority at the recent TABC Showcase in Duncanville. Spears, a Plano native with the kind of versatility that has schools projecting big things down the line, has long looked like the sort of in-state talent the Longhorns would need to keep close, especially with a national list of suitors circling.

Sean Millers staff has been viewed as the one to beat in this recruitment, but Popes push is a reminder that the fight is far from settled. LSU, Alabama, Arizona and Arkansas remain involved, and the longer this turns into a broader SEC-and-beyond battle, the more Texas has to protect its position on a player many believe could develop into an NBA-caliber prospect. Texas Finally Has An Answer For Last Seasons Pass Defense Collapse

Texas spent last season watching its pass defense slide in a way that was hard to ignore, and the response has been just as clear. The Longhorns have gone into recruiting mode with purpose, leaning hard into a defensive back class that is meant to steady the back end and restore some of the confidence that was lost when opposing quarterbacks found too much room to work.

The headliner is Fort Worth cornerback John Meredith, a major pull for the program, and he is part of a group that keeps getting stronger. Texas has also added Sherrard, Jackson from Garland, and a safety out of Alabama, giving the staff multiple pieces to reshape the secondary. The bigger question now is whether this wave of commitments is the start of a real fix or just the first step toward one. [Read more 🡒]
