Georgia enters the season as the SEC’s back-to-back champion, but Paul Finebaum isn’t buying a third straight Bulldogs run.
On Get Up, the veteran analyst pointed to Texas as the team he believes should sit at the top of the league conversation heading into 2026.
“Texas is the team to beat. They have the goods in every department,” he said on Get Up.
Finebaum’s case starts with the roster. In his view, the Longhorns have fewer holes and more proven answers than anyone else in the conference, and that includes a quarterback who now looks far more settled than he did a year ago.
Arch Manning was under enormous pressure when Texas claimed its first-ever No. 1 preseason ranking as a program last year, and the early returns were rocky enough to fuel doubts about whether he could handle the moment. But his second-half surge changed that picture, helping Texas notch statement wins over ranked Oklahoma and Vanderbilt, then finish the regular season with a victory over undefeated rival Texas A&M.
Now Manning is backed by another strong group of skill players, including No. 1 transfer wideout Cam Coleman, with a solid offensive line in front of him. Finebaum also sees a defense that should remain physical under Will Muschamp.
“They have one of the best rosters, if not the best, in all of college football. Certainly the best in the SEC. They have to get to the title game,” Finebaum said.
Georgia still has plenty going for it. Gunner Stockton is back at quarterback, the run game looks promising, the offensive line has blue-chip talent, and the defense remains stout. But Finebaum believes some of the faith in Kirby Smart’s team is tied to reputation as much as what has happened most recently.
“I think there’s too much recency bias. Okay, Kirby Smart. The problem that Kirby Smart has had the last couple of years is he can’t win in the CFP,” Finebaum said.
The ESPN College Football Power Index is leaning the same direction Finebaum is. The predictive model, which simulates every team’s season 20,000 times, gives Texas a 29.7 percent chance to win the SEC championship. Georgia is close behind at 22.9 percent.
Preseason predictions can go sideways fast, but for now the league appears to be tilting toward a Texas-Georgia race.
