Rece Davis is rolling with Texas in the Week 2 heavyweight matchup, even though he still has Ohio State a notch higher in his own rankings.
The “College GameDay” analyst picked No. 4 Texas to knock off No.
1 Ohio State on Saturday night in Austin, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
That puts Davis at odds with podcast co-hosts Pete Thamel and Dan Wetzel, who both backed the Buckeyes.
Davis’ case starts with Arch Manning and the Longhorns’ ability to hit big plays. Manning was sharp in Texas’ 59-7 win over Texas State, going 20 of 27 for 305 yards and four touchdowns, but Davis said there was more production left on the table. His message was simple: against Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, Texas can’t afford to play it safe.
"You better let it rip against Ohio State because you're going to have a harder time consistently being productive against a Matt Patricia defense," Davis said. "You need those chunk plays.
I think Texas gets them. I'm gonna go with Texas to beat Ohio State in what oughta be a great game."
He pointed to Cam Coleman and Hollywood Smothers as the kind of players who can turn those chances into points. Coleman, who transferred from Auburn after posting 708 receiving yards and five touchdowns as a sophomore, made an immediate impact in his Texas debut with three catches for 70 yards and two scores. Ryan Wingo also gave the Longhorns a burst, finishing with seven receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown.
Thamel saw it differently, forecasting a 24-21 Ohio State win and putting the spotlight on the Buckeyes’ offensive line. "I feel like they control the ball and push them around," Thamel said.
Wetzel also sided with Ohio State, while flagging the Austin heat as a factor. "That is the one thing that you cannot ever really duplicate in training," Wetzel said.
Ohio State has already shown why it sits atop the polls. Julian Sayin followed up the Buckeyes’ No. 1 ranking by completing 21 of 25 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns against Ball State, and Jeremiah Smith was dominant with eight catches for 151 yards and two scores before halftime.
Texas will also be trying to get a more polished run game going after finishing with 111 rushing yards outside of Smothers’ 45-yard opening burst against Texas State. On the other side, Colin Simmons is a name to watch after leading the SEC with 12 sacks in 2025. He managed just one tackle, half a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery in the opener, and he has already talked about this game with plenty of confidence.
"Second game of the season, all that nervousness, all that jittery is out the door," Simmons said about the Texas game earlier this offseason. "We're coming. There's business to be taken care of."
Steve Sarkisian also praised the poise he’s seeing from his quarterbacks. "You see the level of confidence both guys are playing with," Sarkisian said. "What you notice is the presence in the pocket and the confidence in using their legs."
The series has gone Ohio State’s way lately. The Buckeyes have won the last two meetings, including a 28-14 College Football Playoff semifinal and a 14-7 win in Columbus last year. Overall, Ohio State leads the all-time series 3-2.
