Texas had enough control Saturday to let its young players breathe a little, and a few freshmen took advantage in the 31-3 win over Mississippi State at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
The Longhorns backed up the Ole Miss victory with another clean showing, smothering the Bulldogs while Arch Manning passed for 220 yards and three touchdowns. With injuries opening the door for younger players, Texas got a closer look at several freshmen across offense, defense, and special teams.
Smoke Matthews was the most noticeable of the group on defense. The first-year cornerback finished with two solo tackles and logged a career-high 39 snaps because sophomore cornerback Kade Phillips and sophomore nickel back Graceson Littleton were sidelined by injuries.
Matthews’ first stop came in the second quarter on a completed pass, when he tackled Mississippi State receiver Marquis Johnson after an eight-yard gain. He added another tackle in the third quarter, bringing down quarterback Parker Puckett after a 12-yard run.
Jermaine Bishop Jr. kept building his role in the passing game. The freshman wideout caught three passes for 17 yards, with his longest grab going for eight.
He was involved throughout the game, hauling in a six-yard catch late in the first quarter, an eight-yard reception on third-and-12 in the second quarter, and a three-yard catch in the fourth. Bishop’s workload also reflected that growing trust, as he played a career-high 30 snaps.
Derrek Cooper got a small piece of the action in the backfield. The freshman running back had one carry for five yards on Texas’ fourth-quarter scoring drive, taking the handoff before Manning hit Emmett Mosley V for a 42-yard touchdown.
Cooper’s role was limited to two snaps, especially with sophomore Michael Terry III seemingly moving ahead of him on the depth chart after injuries and illness. Still, Texas continued to work him into the rotation after earlier flashes, including his 11-carry, 44-yard outing with a touchdown against UTSA.
A number of other freshmen also saw the field in the lopsided win. Linebacker Kosi Okpala played nine snaps and finished with one assisted tackle and one missed tackle.
Cornerback John Meredith III, linebackers Tyler Atkinson and Rocky Cummins, safety Toray Davis, and defensive lineman Jamarion Carlton each got three snaps or fewer on defense. On offense, wide receiver Chris Stewart made his first appearance with three snaps, and he added six more on kick coverage.
Bishop, Matthews, and Davis also appeared on special teams.

Texas Is Back In Playoff Position Now Comes The Hard Part
Texas has put itself in the thick of the College Football Playoff conversation, landing at No. 7 in the first ranking of the season and even slotting ahead of undefeated UCLA. It is the kind of position the Longhorns have been chasing, and it gives their final stretch real weight as the bracket picture starts to take shape around them.
What comes next is the difficult part, because the ranking only matters if Texas keeps stacking wins down the stretch. If the order holds, the Longhorns could be staring at a first-round matchup with Ole Miss and, if they advance, a second-round meeting with Georgia, a path that underlines how narrow the margin is between being in the field and being on the outside looking in. Texas Could Be Closing In On A Huge In-State Recruiting Flip
Xaiver Muhammads recruitment has taken an interesting turn, and Texas is right in the middle of it. The four-star defensive line prospect from Texas is still committed to Michigan, but he has lined up a visit to the Longhorns campus after recently landing an offer from Steve Sarkisian. He has already made an unofficial stop in Austin, which gives Texas a real foothold with a player the staff clearly wants to keep close to home.
For the Longhorns, the timing matters as much as the talent. Muhammads decision to keep looking at Texas comes as questions swirl around Michigans coaching situation under Kyle Whittingham, and that uncertainty appears to be creating an opening. Texas has been working to capitalize on it, and the fact that a committed in-state defender is willing to keep the door open says plenty about where this one could be headed. [Read more 🡒]
Texas Could Land A Rare Receiver Talent Fans Need To Watch
The recruiting spotlight swings back to the 2028 class this week, and Brysen Wright is right at the center of it. The five-star wide receiver, ESPNs top-ranked prospect in that cycle, is set to announce his college commitment on Thursday, with Texas still in the mix as one of three finalists alongside Florida and Miami.
For the Longhorns, this is the kind of national chase that can shape the early feel of a recruiting class long before it takes form. Wright has built a reputation as a standout at Mandarin High School with the kind of athletic profile and following that tend to draw attention far beyond state lines, and Texas is hoping that appeal translates into a future on the Forty Acres.
