Texas Freshman Austin Goosby Just Earned Early National Attention

Keep an eye on Texas freshman Austin Goosby as he joins the ranks of top contenders for the prestigious Jerry West Award.

Texas freshman Austin Goosby has landed on the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award preseason watch list, giving the Longhorns a representative among the 20 candidates announced Tuesday by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

The honor, named for the late Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player Jerry West, is in its 13th year and goes to the top shooting guard in Division I men’s college basketball. The watch list will be trimmed to 10 players in February, then narrowed again to five finalists in March. The winner of the 2027 West Award will be announced on a date still to be determined, and the list remains open to movement until those finalists are set.

Goosby arrives at Texas with plenty of recognition already on his résumé. He is the 24th player in program history to take part in the McDonald’s All-American Game and the 17th to appear in the Jordan Brand Classic. In the Class of 2026 rankings, he checked in at No. 18 by 247 Sports, No. 20 by ESPN, No. 23 by 247 Sports Composite and No. 26 by On3.

His final prep season came at Dynamic Prep in Irving, Texas, where he averaged 16.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.5 steals per game. He helped lead the team to a 39-5 record and a trip to the Chipotle Nationals semifinals. Playing as FaZe in the Overtime Elite league, the group also went 20-0 across the regular season and playoffs to claim the OTE championship.

Texas will open the 2026-27 regular season at home against Chicago State on Monday, Nov. 2.

Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Central at Moody Center, with SEC Network carrying the game nationally.

The full preseason watch list also includes Denzel Aberdeen of Florida, Matt Able of North Carolina, Alijah Arenas of USC, Finley Bizjack of West Virginia, John Blackwell of Duke, Miles Byrd of Providence, Collin Chandler of BYU, Quentin Coleman of Illinois, Mason Falslev of Utah State, PJ Haggerty of Texas A&M, Caleb Holt of Arizona, Trey McKenney of Michigan, John Mobley Jr. of Ohio State, Braylon Mullins of UConn, Tyler Perkins of Villanova, Trent Perry of UCLA, Killyan Toure of Iowa State, Seth Trimble of Louisville and Jeremiah Wilkinson of Arkansas.

Texas Fans Wont Like What One Sarkisian Call Revealed

Early in the third quarter against Ole Miss, Steve Sarkisian went to a mesh concept that should have given Texas a clean answer in the passing game. Freshman wide receiver Jermaine Bishop and fifth-year tight end Michael Masunas were the crossers, but the play never got the rhythm it needed, with timing and spacing breaking down before it could develop.

Arch Mannings footwork also looked off under pressure from the defensive line, and the result was an unsuccessful snap that ended in a three-and-out. For a Texas offense that needs cleaner execution in key moments, it was a small sequence that said plenty about where the unit still has work to do. [Read more 🡒]

Trevor Goosby News Leaves Texas Facing A Bigger NFL Reality

Trevor Goosbys season-ending surgery closed the book on one of the more sobering developments in Texas year, but it also underscored how quickly the conversation around his future has shifted from college football to the NFL. The Longhorns left tackle had the procedure performed by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Daniel Cooper to repair a torn patellar tendon, and the expectation is that he will make a full recovery with no residual effects.

Goosby will miss the rest of the season, leaving Texas to regroup without one of its most highly regarded young blockers. Even with the injury, he remains viewed as a potential top pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, which is part of what makes this setback feel bigger than a single lost year and more like an early reminder of how much is riding on his health going forward. Texas Passing Game Faces A Real Test Against Mississippi State

Texas has spent the first part of the season trying to get its passing game into a rhythm, and the numbers have shown it. Through seven games, the Longhorns rank 74th in passing yards per game, which leaves plenty of room for improvement as the schedule tightens and defenses start looking more comfortable taking away the obvious answers.

Mississippi State figures to be a stern next test on the perimeter. Cornerbacks Jett Jefferson and Kelley Jones have both graded well on the defensive side, and Jones already has a history with Texas after intercepting Arch Manning last season. With Ryan Wingo and Cam Coleman among the receivers likely to draw his attention again, Texas will have to prove its passing game can hold up against one of the better cornerback groups it has seen.
