Texas football is making another strategic move behind the scenes, expected to bring in Kevin Mashack as its new Director of Scouting. According to reports, Mashack is set to fill the vacancy left by Errin Joe, who held the role for just one season before heading to North Texas to take over as General Manager.
Mashack brings a deep well of experience to Austin, with a résumé that spans both college football and the NFL. Most recently, he served as Tennessee State’s Director of Recruiting, but his journey through the football world has been anything but linear - and that’s exactly what makes this hire intriguing for the Longhorns.
In 2022, Mashack was at Texas A&M as the Director of Player Personnel under Jimbo Fisher, a role that put him at the heart of one of the most talent-rich programs in the country. Before that, he was at Indiana in 2021, overseeing player personnel and high school relations. That dual role speaks to his versatility - not just identifying talent, but building the relationships that bring it in the door.
But Mashack’s roots run even deeper at Tennessee State, his alma mater, where he’s had two separate stints. From 2015 to 2021, he wore multiple hats: recruiting coordinator, pro liaison, running backs coach, and wide receivers coach. That’s the kind of hands-on, all-around football background that gives a scouting director a unique edge - someone who’s evaluated players from the film room to the practice field.
And this isn’t just a college football résumé. Mashack spent two years in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2013-15) as part of their scouting personnel staff. That experience adds another layer to his evaluation toolkit, giving him insight into what it takes for college talent to make the leap to the next level.
His first run at Tennessee State, from 2007 to 2013, also saw him juggle several responsibilities - from coaching tight ends and running backs to handling video coordination and pro liaison duties. It’s a career built on adaptability, a deep understanding of the game, and a clear eye for talent.
Mashack holds both a bachelor's degree in social science (2007) and a master’s in education (2009) from Tennessee State, further underscoring his long-standing connection to the program and his commitment to player development on and off the field.
For Texas, this hire aligns with the broader philosophy head coach Steve Sarkisian has emphasized: it’s not just about chasing stars - it’s about finding the right fit. Last summer, Sarkisian laid it out clearly: “We try to identify really good players who are really good people that fit our program, fit our culture... We just try to trust our evaluation, forge relationships, and see if it’s good enough.”
Mashack seems to fit that mold perfectly - someone who’s been in the trenches, understands what it takes to build a roster from the ground up, and knows how to spot the kind of talent that doesn’t just win games, but elevates a program.
In today’s college football landscape, where the margins between good and elite are razor-thin, having a sharp eye in the scouting department can be the difference-maker. Texas believes Mashack can be that guy - and if his track record is any indication, they might be right.
