Texas A&M got a little more public firepower in the chase for Landen Williams-Callis, and this time it came from one of its own commits.
With the four-star running back set to announce his decision on Aug. 1, Texas A&M quarterback pledge Jayce Johnson took a direct shot at helping the Aggies land him. In a story posted by GigEm247, Johnson made his pitch plain: "Landen, if you're reading this write-up, go ahead and make that move," Johnson said.
That kind of message only adds another layer to a recruiting fight that has mostly been framed as Texas versus Texas A&M. For the last month and a half, the two in-state rivals have been the main schools battling for the blue-chip back from Richmond, TX, even as other programs have drifted in and out of the picture.
The Longhorns have had the edge in the prediction game so far. Every expert pick logged for Williams-Callis has pointed to Texas, including projections from On3’s Steve Wiltfong and Sam Spiegelman. But Texas A&M has stayed in the mix, and Johnson’s public recruiting push is another sign the Aggies aren’t backing off.
Williams-Callis has also drawn attention from SMU, and more recently Missouri has entered the conversation in a real way. 247Sports has labeled Mizzou and Texas as the top two teams in the race, which only adds more uncertainty to a recruitment that has already tightened up.
Texas, meanwhile, already has a four-star running back committed in Noah Roberts, ranked No. 19 at the position in the 2027 class. Williams-Callis sits even higher on the board as the No. 3 running back in the cycle, which explains why the Longhorns are still pressing hard for him despite an already loaded class.
Steve Sarkisian’s group has stacked up plenty of blue-chip talent on offense, including wide receiver Easton Royal and interior offensive lineman Ismael Camara, among others. Even with that haul, Texas is clearly still making Williams-Callis a priority.
At this point, the safest bet is that the only person who truly knows where this ends is Williams-Callis himself. When Saturday arrives, the recruiting world may still be waiting for the answer.
