Texas Fans Finally Got Clarity On That Costly Fourth Down

Texas AD Chris Del Conte addresses the controversy surrounding the use of AI analytics in a crucial game decision, aiming to clarify the role of technology in the Longhorns' strategy.

Texas athletics director Chris Del Conte moved to clean up the air around a controversial fourth-down call from last weekend’s 27-24 home loss to Florida, after a report linked the decision to a new AI-driven analytics platform.

The uproar started with a Friday article in the Austin American-Statesman, which reported that Del Conte had pointed to a fourth-and-2 situation as an example of Texas leaning into Bevo Lab, the school’s new AI data analytics initiative. On the play, the Longhorns trailed Florida 20-17 and quarterback Arch Manning was stopped for a 3-yard loss.

Del Conte later clarified those remarks, saying he was describing what the AI platform could recommend rather than saying it actually made that call, according to On Texas Football’s Bobby Burton.

Texas introduced Bevo Lab on Friday and described it as “higher education's premier sports intelligence platform and living laboratory.”

The timing of the controversy lands at a rough moment for the Longhorns, who were sitting atop the AP Top 25 only two weeks ago but are now unranked after consecutive defeats. Their next chance to steady things comes Saturday against No. 7 Ole Miss.

Even with the slide, Del Conte said Thursday he wasn’t sounding the alarm.

“Rome is not burning,” Del Conte said, per CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello. “Expectations should be high.

They're high for us, too. That's why you come to University of Texas.

But the noise is a lot greater outside than it is in our building, than it is on the Forty Acres.”

Pete Golding Sees A Different Problem In Texas' Offense

Texas offense has spent much of the season drawing scrutiny for the stops and starts that have kept it from looking as smooth as expected, but Ole Miss coach Pete Golding offered a different read on the situation. He pointed to more than just playcalling or execution, noting the kinds of small losses that can snowball over a game and across a season, including dropped passes and missed chances that have changed the feel of drives.

Golding also acknowledged the obvious flaws, from trouble getting the running game established to the pressure that has been on Arch Manning, while still framing the Longhorns as a team with plenty of talent and coaching. The bigger question, though, is whether Texas offensive issues are mostly a matter of tightening up the details or if the larger problem runs deeper than the recent numbers suggest. [Read more 🡒]

Austin Got A Texas Showdown Fans Wont Stop Talking About

Austin got a rare NBA spotlight at the Moody Center, and the exhibition-like feel of the setting did nothing to blunt the stakes when the Rockets and Spurs turned it into a tight finish. Houston came away with a 114-110 win, a result that felt notable not just because it was played in Austin, but because both teams are viewed as legitimate Western Conference contenders and played like it down the stretch.

Kevin Durant led Houston with a strong performance, while the late sequence belonged to Amen Thompson after he blocked Victor Wembanyamas last-second shot attempt to seal it. For Texas fans, it was the kind of matchup that fed the old in-state rivalry energy in a new arena, and the kind of ending that will keep people talking long after the final horn. [Read more 🡒]

Texas Faces One Brutal Test Protecting Arch Manning Against Ole Miss

Ole Miss has already spent much of the season in the kind of games that sharpen a team for November, playing four ranked opponents and coming away with three ranked wins under Pete Golding. Now the Rebels get Texas, a program that has tumbled from No. 1 to No. 19 after back-to-back losses, and the matchup carries the sort of edge that can expose every weakness. For the Longhorns, the main question starts up front, where the offensive line will have to handle a defense that has been tested and keeps coming at offenses with purpose.

The Rebels have the kind of pieces that make a protection problem even harder to solve, from Blake Purchase and Will Echoles on the defensive side to Deuce Alexander on offense. For Texas, the challenge is not just keeping Arch Manning upright, but doing it against a team that has shown it can punish ranked opponents and force them into uncomfortable football. If the Longhorns are going to steady things, this is the kind of test that will tell the story quickly. [Read more 🡒]
