Texas Faces Michigan With History On The Line

Texas and Michigan clash in a high-stakes Elite Eight showdown, with Texas seeking back-to-back Final Four appearances and Michigan aiming for a historic first.

The Texas Longhorns are no strangers to the Elite Eight, making their fifth appearance in six seasons under the guidance of head coach Vic Schaefer. With a win on Monday at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, they could secure a spot in the Final Four for the second consecutive year. Standing in their way are the formidable Michigan Wolverines, a No. 2 seed eager to make history by reaching their first Final Four.

A bit of drama surfaced after Texas’ victory celebration on Saturday when the seniors mistakenly placed their placard too far along the bracket, suggesting they had already claimed the regional championship. This sparked a minor controversy, but senior point guard Rori Harmon clarified the situation, emphasizing it was an innocent mistake.

“Obviously no one recognized in the moment, and if we did, you would quickly change it,” Harmon explained. “We didn’t recognize it until we left. But of course, if you are another team, you are going to use anything for fire… so that’s valid enough.”

Head coach Vic Schaefer defended his team, addressing comments from Houston Chronicle columnist Kirk Bohls. Schaefer was quick to assert the integrity of his players, stating, “Not a disrespectful bone in our locker room.

We respect the game and our opponents. But don’t disrespect us falsely.”

As Texas prepares for their familiar Elite Eight stage, Michigan finds itself in less charted territory. Under head coach Kimberly Barnes Arico, the Wolverines have set new program records, including 24 regular-season wins and 15 Big Ten victories.

Led by standout sophomores Olivia Olson and Syla Swords, Michigan boasts a potent offense, ranking ninth nationally in scoring at 83.9 points per game. Notably, they are undefeated when scoring at least 80 points.

Michigan’s path to the Elite Eight included a decisive 71-52 victory over No. 3 seed Louisville, with Olson leading the way with 19 points. Te’Yala Delfosse also made a significant impact off the bench, contributing 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Longhorns, meanwhile, have been on a tear, securing their third straight dominant win in the NCAA Tournament by defeating No. 5 seed Kentucky 76-54. Texas took control early with a 15-0 run and never looked back, leading by 22 points at halftime.

Sophomore guard Jordan Lee led the charge with 18 points, while junior wing Madison Booker added 17 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Harmon also contributed with an impressive all-around performance.

With Texas shooting over 50 percent for the 18th time this season and riding an 11-game winning streak, they’re poised for another deep tournament run. As the Longhorns and Wolverines clash, fans can expect a thrilling battle with a Final Four berth on the line.
