Texas spent its bye week watching the national picture shift around it, but when the new US LBM Coaches Poll came out Sunday, the Longhorns were still exactly where they started: No. 1.
Texas held the top spot with 45 first-place votes and 1,806 total points, staying unbeaten at 4-0 after wins over Texas State, Ohio State, UTSA and Tennessee. The latest résumé item still stands out the most - a 20-17 road win at Tennessee that gave the Longhorns another big result before their open date.
Georgia stayed right behind at No. 2 after moving to 5-0 and picking up 20 first-place votes. Notre Dame remained third, with Miami and Indiana rounding out the top five.
Ohio State and Alabama stayed in place at No. 6 and No. 7, while BYU, Texas Tech and LSU each climbed one spot to finish out the Top 10.
The most dramatic movement came lower in the poll. Florida slid seven places to No. 15 after losing at Missouri, and Missouri jumped nine spots to No.
- Iowa dropped to No. 18 after its loss to Ohio State, and Mississippi State fell four spots to No.
The SEC still has a heavy presence near the top, with 10 teams in the Top 25, including Texas and Georgia at Nos. 1 and 2.
But the rankings are about to take a back seat.
Texas comes out of the bye on Saturday for the Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl, where the Longhorns have taken the last two meetings by a combined 57-9. Texas beat Oklahoma 34-3 in 2024 and then followed that with a 23-6 win last season.
This time, the game carries even more weight with Texas entering Dallas as the No. 1 team in the country.
The extra week off also gave the Longhorns time to recover after an opening stretch that already included Ohio State and Tennessee.
Now comes the next test. Texas kept its No. 1 ranking through the bye. Holding onto it will mean beating Oklahoma again.

Texas Soccer Just Delivered A Rivalry Win Fans Will Love
A rivalry win is always a good way to settle into conference play, and Texas had plenty to like Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The Longhorns edged Oklahoma 2-1 in a match that leaned on Villarreal from start to finish, with the forward scoring both goals to give Texas a result its fans will remember.
Villarreal finished the job with a penalty kick and later delivered the game-winning strike, while goalkeeper Bayliss Flynn helped preserve the lead with five saves. In a matchup that always carries extra weight, Texas got the kind of all-around performance that can boost confidence well beyond one night on the schedule. [Read more 🡒]
Texas Enters SEC Play With One Offensive Concern Fans Can't Ignore
Through four games of the 2026 season, Texas has put together a start that looks sturdy on one side of the ball and unfinished on the other. The defense has done its job, and the Longhorns have shown more discipline overall than they did in past years, even with one game marked by a heavy penalty count. But the offense has not matched that level of steadiness, leaving Steve Sarkisian with a clear issue to sort out as SEC play begins.
The biggest concern is a familiar one: third downs. Texas has hovered at an average conversion rate there, and Arch Mannings passing numbers have been mixed enough to keep the attack from finding a clean rhythm. The Longhorns do not need a wholesale overhaul, but they do need more consistency from a unit that has flashed enough to suggest better is there if it can just show up when the downs get longer and the pressure gets real. Texas Enters Red River With Even More Pressure At The Top
Texas heads into the Red River rivalry still sitting atop the national conversation, a position that brings as much scrutiny as it does reward. The latest AP and coaches polls kept the Longhorns at No. 1, while several other top-10 teams held steady after the weekends results, leaving the rankings largely unchanged near the top as the sport turns its attention to Dallas.
Florida was the lone top-10 team to slip, getting rolled at Missouri, and that kind of shakeup only adds to the pressure on teams like Texas that are trying to stay spotless in the eyes of voters. With the rankings settled and Oklahoma next on the schedule, the Longhorns are entering one of the seasons biggest stages with every win carrying the weight that comes with being the team everyone is chasing.
