Texas is getting another crack at a blue-chip defensive lineman, and this one comes with a familiar backdrop: Michigan slipping, Texas surging, and a recruit already lining up another look at the 40 Acres.
Earlier this week, recruiting insider Cody Carpentier reported that Xaiver Muhammad, a four-star defensive line prospect in the class of 2027, has scheduled a visit to Texas even though he remains committed to Michigan.
Muhammad is rated as a top-10 defensive lineman in the cycle, and he pledged to the Wolverines in May under new head coach Kyle Whittingham. But with Michigan’s first season under Whittingham going sideways, the possibility of losing top-end talent is starting to loom.
Texas has a HISTORY of closing big names on that weekend.

Whittingham’s debut in Ann Arbor has not gone the way Michigan hoped. The Wolverines are 5-3 and sitting 11th in the Big Ten, and the bigger issue, at least from the outside, is that Whittingham has not connected with the program in the way Michigan fans expect from their head coach. The result is a recruiting opening Texas is eager to exploit.
Muhammad’s next trip to Austin is set for Week 12, when Arkansas comes to town. That gives the Longhorns a chance to showcase a rivalry atmosphere in front of a recruit who is already on their radar.
It also helps that Muhammad is a Texas native from just outside Houston. Texas offered him on Oct. 22, and two days later he was already on campus for his first unofficial visit. Now he’s planning to spend more time around Steve Sarkisian and the staff, which only strengthens Texas’ push to flip him.
When Muhammad committed to Michigan, he had already heard from several Power Conference programs in Texas, including Texas Tech, Houston, TCU and SMU. But with the way his recruitment is trending, Texas looks like the program with the most pull.
Texas and Arkansas are set to play Saturday, Nov. 21, and the Longhorns should have a chance to make a strong impression with Muhammad watching from the sidelines.

Texas Is Back In Playoff Position Now Comes The Hard Part
Texas has put itself in the thick of the College Football Playoff conversation, landing at No. 7 in the first ranking of the season and even slotting ahead of undefeated UCLA. It is the kind of position the Longhorns have been chasing, and it gives their final stretch real weight as the bracket picture starts to take shape around them.
What comes next is the difficult part, because the ranking only matters if Texas keeps stacking wins down the stretch. If the order holds, the Longhorns could be staring at a first-round matchup with Ole Miss and, if they advance, a second-round meeting with Georgia, a path that underlines how narrow the margin is between being in the field and being on the outside looking in. Texas Could Land A Rare Receiver Talent Fans Need To Watch
The recruiting spotlight swings back to the 2028 class this week, and Brysen Wright is right at the center of it. The five-star wide receiver, ESPNs top-ranked prospect in that cycle, is set to announce his college commitment on Thursday, with Texas still in the mix as one of three finalists alongside Florida and Miami.
For the Longhorns, this is the kind of national chase that can shape the early feel of a recruiting class long before it takes form. Wright has built a reputation as a standout at Mandarin High School with the kind of athletic profile and following that tend to draw attention far beyond state lines, and Texas is hoping that appeal translates into a future on the Forty Acres. Texas Freshmen Just Put New Pressure On The Longhorns Depth Chart
The Longhorns 31-3 win over Mississippi State at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium did more than pad a rsum and keep the momentum rolling. It also offered a clearer look at how quickly some of Texas younger players are beginning to matter, with freshmen Jermaine Bishop Jr., Derrek Cooper and Smoke Matthews all finding ways to contribute in meaningful snaps.
Bishop Jr. chipped in as a receiver, Cooper got involved in the run game and Matthews made his presence felt on defense, all while injuries forced several backup players onto the field. For a Texas team trying to build reliable depth, those kinds of contributions can change the way the depth chart looks the rest of the way. [Read more 🡒]
