Texas Longhorns commit John Meredith III isn’t shy about where he stands on Texas Tech.
The 2027 five-star cornerback, who is committed to Texas, told Rivals national recruiting reporter Adam Gorney that he wants the Longhorns and Red Raiders back on the field against each other.
"I would like Texas to play Texas Tech so people can know what's the real difference between them," Meredith said.
That sentiment lands in the middle of an offseason that has already featured plenty of back-and-forth between the two programs. The talk has built toward the idea of a future matchup, and Meredith made it clear he’d welcome it.
The rivalry hasn’t been on the schedule since 2023, when Texas rolled to a 57-7 win over Texas Tech. That result only sharpened the case for why a rematch would carry so much noise - and, at least based on the last meeting, a familiar outcome.
Texas has also owned the series for a long stretch. Since 2000, the Longhorns are 18-5 against the Red Raiders, a run that has left little doubt about which side has had the upper hand.
Still, the chatter hasn’t gone away. Texas Tech has kept poking at Texas this offseason, and the noise has only fueled more interest in seeing the teams line up again. Meredith is clearly in that camp, and plenty of Longhorns fans would probably be happy to see it too.
For now, the question is simple: will the in-state foes ever meet again?
