Texas’ offense had a rougher day in the second fall camp scrimmage, and Steve Sarkisian didn’t hide it. But the bigger takeaway may be what that says about a defense that keeps forcing the issue under Will Muschamp.
Sarkisian said the Longhorns’ offense, after looking solid for about two and a half weeks, hit a wall once the team got into the scrimmage setting.
"Things that we have done well for two and a half weeks' time, and all of a sudden, we got into that arena, and we made some mistakes that were uncharacteristic to us, so we've got to get to the bottom of that," Sarkisian said.
That doesn’t mean Texas should panic over one scrimmage. Practice is supposed to expose problems, and mistakes happen. But the way the defense performed Saturday made it hard to ignore what Muschamp’s group is building.
Sarkisian said the defense came away with four takeaways in the second scrimmage, including a pick-six from Kosi Okpala. He also praised the secondary for its work in coverage.
"I thought defensively they really showed up ready to go today," Sarkisian said. "I would probably argue that the last two days, the offense got the better of the defense.
I thought that the defense came ready to go today (Saturday). I think they created four turnovers.
I think they created plenty of third-and-longs. I think they rushed the passer.
They were sticky in coverage. With that being said, there were things that they need to improve upon, too."
There’s plenty to like about the personnel, too. Colin Simmons gives Texas a premier edge threat.
Rasheem Biles, the Pitt transfer, has kept drawing praise from the coaching staff at linebacker. And Jelani McDonald looks like a major piece in the secondary.
The numbers from last season show a defense that was productive in some areas and merely average in others. Texas finished sixth in the SEC in points allowed per game at 19.8, ninth in total yards allowed at 336, but still ranked third in sacks and second in interceptions.
Now the group is leaning into a more aggressive identity under Muschamp. That edge shows up in the way the defense is coached and the way it attacks. The style is intense, and it won’t be for everybody, but the results have been good enough to matter.
With Arch Manning set to be one of the biggest talking points around the offense, Texas’ defense is making noise in camp. And with several elite offenses on the schedule, the Longhorns appear to have the right man steering that side of the ball.
