Texas is building real momentum with four-star combo guard Tai Bell, one of the most coveted prospects in the class of 2028.
Bell, a blue-chip guard from the Miami area, checks in as the No. 22 overall recruit in his class and the No. 4 point guard. He already holds offers from nearly three dozen schools, but so far he has only lined up two official visits: Arizona State and Ole Miss. Even with that crowded field, Texas has clearly made an impression.
"Things are great with the Longhorns… It meant a lot that they showed up four deep to my games," Bell told Texas insider Jalen Brown.
For Sean Miller and Texas, that kind of reaction matters. The Longhorns have been busy on the recruiting trail ever since landing the No. 4 overall class of 2026, and they’ve turned their attention quickly to the next waves. Texas still hasn’t secured a commitment in the 2027 or 2028 cycles, but the program appears to be closing in on its first breakthrough.
That said, the chase has not been without some misses. The Longhorns have already swung and come up short on a couple of major targets, including four-star shooting Justin Wise and five-star center Darius Wabbington, both class of 2027 prospects who picked other schools.
Still, Bell is not the only elite player giving Texas a hard look. Five-star point guard Beckham Black is also keeping the Longhorns near the top of his list.
Black became the No. 1 overall recruit in the class of 2027 after five-star forward Marcus Spears Jr. committed to Texas and reclassified to 2026. According to 247Sports’ recruiting evaluations, Black is leaning most heavily toward Texas and Arkansas right now.
Texas is also showing well with a pair of class of 2028 standouts: five-star small forward Evan Willis and four-star shooting guard Jordan Mize.
None of the prospects Texas has offered has set a decision date yet, but the Longhorns are positioned well enough that their first commitment from either of the next two recruiting classes could be coming soon.
And with the season approaching, the on-court product should start giving Miller’s recruiting push some timely fuel. Texas plays an exhibition game against St.
John's on Sunday, Oct. 25, before opening the regular season at home against Chicago State on Monday, Nov. 2, at 8 p.m. CT.

Alabama Suddenly Faces Real Pressure After College Footballs Wildest Shakeup
College football spent one wild October Saturday blowing up its own hierarchy, and Texas was right in the middle of it. Five of the AP Top 25s top seven teams went down in Week 7, an almost unthinkable turn in a regular season, with No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 5 Indiana, No. 6 Alabama and No. 7 Texas all taking losses on the same day.
The result is a rankings shakeup that could leave Miami atop the poll for the first time since 2002 after its double-overtime win over Florida State. For Texas, the sting is obvious, but so is the broader reality: when the sports upper crust gets rattled this badly, one bad Saturday can reshape the playoff chase in a hurry. [Read more 🡒]
Arch Manning Suddenly Faces A Texas Question Fans Never Wanted
Two straight losses have turned Arch Mannings start into the kind of conversation Texas hoped it would not have to have this early. The Longhorns came into the stretch expecting steadier play from the quarterback spot, but the recent skid has put the offense under a brighter spotlight and forced the staff to look hard at what is and is not working.
Steve Sarkisian said the offense needs a full evaluation, and that includes the quarterback position. With KJ Lacey, Dia Bell and MJ Morris among the names being discussed as possible alternatives, the question around Manning is no longer just about development or patience. It has become part of a broader search for answers as Texas tries to stop the slide. [Read more 🡒]
Texas Fans Still Waiting On Colin Simmons After Brutal Injury Scare
Colin Simmons gave Texas a real scare when the edge rusher went down with a lower-leg injury and had to be carted off for evaluation. The early word is that he suffered a sprained ankle, but the Longhorns are still waiting on a clearer picture as they turn their attention to Ole Miss.
Steve Sarkisian said the staff will keep evaluating Simmons, and the next official checkpoint should come with the SEC availability report later in the week. For a Texas defense that leans on Simmons impact off the edge, the timing makes this one worth watching closely as game week unfolds. [Read more 🡒]
