Scottie Scheffler pulled off a clutch performance to keep his remarkable streak of 68 consecutive made cuts alive. At the iconic Riviera Country Club, Scheffler found himself needing a seven-foot putt for par on the 18th hole to make the cut for the weekend. True to form, the 20-time PGA Tour winner and four-time major champion showed nerves of steel, sinking the putt to secure his spot.
Reflecting on the moment, Scheffler said, "I tried to make a mess of a pretty basic chip there on 18. I caught it a little thin and just dug in. It was nice to be able to hole a putt and get another two cracks at the course."
This achievement extends his streak to 68, a staggering 46 more than the next best active streak held by Harris English. The last time Scheffler missed a cut was back in August 2022 at the FedEx St.
Jude Championship. Since then, he's been more familiar with contending for titles than worrying about cuts.
However, recent weeks have seen Scheffler needing strong Friday performances to stay in the mix. His opening rounds at TPC Scottsdale, Pebble Beach, and Riviera have been a combined +5. Despite this, he managed to finish in the top five at Scottsdale and Pebble Beach, showcasing his resilience.
Scheffler's ability to grind through tough rounds has become a hallmark of his play. In his second round at Riviera, he was four over par after eight holes, four shots shy of the cutline. With time running out, Scheffler knew he needed to step up.
"I pretty much knew I had to get to at least even par with the way the conditions were," he explained. And step up he did, birdieing three consecutive holes and adding another on the par-five 17th to reach even par.
While making the cut might not seem monumental, it’s a testament to his consistency and determination. A win might be a stretch, but with two solid rounds, Scheffler could very well secure his 18th consecutive top-10 finish.
He'll tee off for his third round at 9:45 Central Time on ESPN+, ready to take on the course once more.
