Steve Sarkisian’s night at Texas ended with a jolt of chaos, a burst of celebration, and a postgame interview that never really got off the ground.
After the Longhorns finished off a 24-23 comeback win over No. 1 Ohio State on Saturday night in Austin, ESPN’s Holly Rowe tried to start her on-field conversation with the Texas coach.
She didn’t get far. Sarkisian cut in, shouting, “Let’s go, Texas fight!
Let’s go, Texas fight!” into the microphone before adding “Hook ‘Em!”
and walking away.
It was a strange finish to an already messy broadcast sequence for Texas and ESPN.
Earlier in the night, Sarkisian was supposed to speak with ESPN’s Laura Rutledge at halftime, but technical issues got in the way. Texas had gone into the locker room trailing 20-3, and the scheduled interview never happened in the usual spot.
Rutledge later addressed the situation once Texas returned for the second half.
“I do want to make sure we clear something up: (Sarkisian) did decline the interview at the half,” Rutledge said before the start of the third quarter. “He had waited a long time, been very patient with some technical issues that we had.
He apologized to us. We should be apologizing to him, which we did.”
According to a Texas spokesperson, ESPN ran into technical difficulties again on the field after the game, and that was part of what shaped Sarkisian’s reaction with Rowe.
The win marked the biggest regular-season victory of the Steve Sarkisian era at Texas and the program’s fifth all-time win over a top-ranked opponent.
