Oklahoma’s 2028 non-conference schedule is getting another wrinkle.
Per a report from FBSchedules, the Sooners have added Missouri State to the slate for Sept. 9 in Norman, with the Bears set to receive $1.2 million for the game. That gives Oklahoma a fourth non-conference opponent on the books for 2028, at least for now.
The rest of that schedule is already crowded. OU is slated to host Temple and Colorado State, and it also has a road trip to Houston lined up against the Big 12 Cougars. That Houston matchup matters because the SEC now requires its schools to schedule at least one Power Four opponent.
Even with Missouri State added, it still doesn’t mean Oklahoma will ultimately play four non-conference games that year. One of the other matchups could still get trimmed, and money appears to be a major factor in whatever decision comes next.
If Temple gets dropped, the report says Oklahoma would owe $700,000. Scrapping Colorado State would cost the Sooners $1 million.
Cancelling the Houston game also would run $1 million, though that seems far less likely since it is OU’s lone Power Four non-conference opponent. The Sooners are also tied to that home-and-home with Houston that started in 2024, when Oklahoma won 16-12 on the road.
Missouri State is a familiar name for the Sooners, even if the series is brief. The teams have met once, with Oklahoma rolling past the Bears 48-0 in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic-shortened season. That year, Missouri State was the only non-conference game left on Oklahoma’s schedule after the trip to West Point and the home game against Tennessee were canceled because of the pandemic.
For Oklahoma, all of this is part of a bigger scheduling puzzle as the sport keeps shifting. With the SEC moving to nine conference games and requiring a Power Four non-conference opponent, the Sooners may have to keep adjusting future slates.
Looking ahead, Oklahoma is set to open 2027 at home against Utah State and San Diego State, while also playing SMU at AT&T Stadium in a neutral-site game as its Power Four opponent.
The 2029 schedule already includes a long-awaited renewal with Nebraska in Norman, followed by the return game in Lincoln in 2030. That same 2029 slate also has a road game at San Diego State, with a third meeting in Norman in 2031 to finish the series. As it stands now, 2029 has only two non-conference games scheduled.
Farther out, Oklahoma currently has Clemson on the calendar in 2035 and 2036.
