Madison Booker Set The Tone For A Dangerous Texas Opener

Deck: The Texas Longhorns delivered a commanding performance against FDU, showcasing their offensive prowess in a victorious season opener.

No. 6 Texas wasted no time setting the tone in its season opener, jumping on FDU early and rolling to an 85-65 win Wednesday at Moody Center.

The Longhorns opened with a 15-0 burst and kept the Knights off the board for the first 5:37. From there, Texas stayed in control behind a big night from Madison Booker and Breya Cunningham, picking up its first victory of the season in front of the home crowd.

Booker finished with 24 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals, and she did plenty of damage right away. She scored 13 points in the first quarter alone, then added five more points and two assists in the third.

Booker also moved into fourth on the Texas all-time career scoring list with 1,993 points, passing Cinietra Henderson, who had 1,983 points from 1989-1993. It was the 44th game of her career with 20 or more points, and she went 10 of 20 from the field.

Cunningham turned in a strong all-around performance of her own, posting 21 points and 13 rebounds for her fifth career double-double. She also knocked down her first career 3-pointer and scored 11 points in the opening quarter as Texas raced to a 30-8 lead after one. Cunningham now has 936 career points.

Lizzy Spaight capped the first quarter with a buzzer beater, and Texas never gave the lead back. Jayda Clark led the Longhorns with five points in the second quarter as Texas took a 44-27 advantage into halftime.

The Longhorns kept the pressure on after the break. They opened the third quarter by forcing an FDU turnover, and Booker continued to push the margin with another five points. Texas finished the period up 66-42.

The fourth quarter started with an Etute layup and then a pullup jumper by Preston after another FDU turnover, as Texas kept the game comfortably out of reach.

Texas won the turnover battle in a major way, forcing 18 and turning them into 22 points off turnovers. The Longhorns also owned the glass, grabbing 20 offensive rebounds and scoring 22 second-chance points. Texas got 22 points from its bench and went 12-of-14 from the free-throw line.

Grace Prenter also hit her first 3-pointer of the season, the third of her career.

The win extended Texas’ run of success in season openers under Vic Schaefer to 7-0. The Longhorns are now 41-12 all-time in season openers and have won 45 straight games at Moody Center, where they are 70-5 all-time.

Texas will be back in action against Northern Colorado on Sat. Nov. 7 at 7:00 p.m.

Texas Could Be Closing In On A Huge In-State Recruiting Flip

Texas has put itself in the mix for one of the more intriguing in-state recruiting battles on the board, with four-star defensive line prospect Xaiver Muhammad now scheduled to visit campus despite being committed to Michigan. The Texas native recently picked up an offer from Steve Sarkisian and has already made an unofficial stop in Austin, which is enough to keep the Longhorns firmly in the conversation as they try to pull a high-end defender back home.

Muhammads interest comes at a time when Michigans situation on the coaching side has become a talking point in recruiting circles, and that uncertainty appears to be part of what Texas is trying to capitalize on. For the Longhorns, the appeal is straightforward: land a talented local prospect, keep him close to home, and turn a committed player into a serious flip candidate as the visit process continues. Texas Could Land A Rare Receiver Talent Fans Need To Watch

Brysen Wright is set to make one of the more closely watched recruiting decisions of the week, with the five-star wide receiver expected to announce his college commitment on Thursday. The Mandarin High School standout has built a national profile as ESPNs top-ranked 2028 prospect, and Texas remains in the mix as one of the three finalists alongside Florida and Miami.

For the Longhorns, this is the kind of recruitment that can resonate well beyond one class. Wrights combination of production, athletic reputation and national attention has made him a priority target, and Texas has stayed in the hunt as the decision nears. The only question now is whether the Longhorns can close against two other major programs when the announcement finally arrives. [Read more 🡒]

Texas Freshmen Just Put New Pressure On The Longhorns Depth Chart

The win over Mississippi State was comfortable on the scoreboard, but it also offered a useful glimpse into how much the Longhorns are leaning on their younger players. Freshmen Jermaine Bishop Jr., Derrek Cooper and Smoke Matthews all found ways to get on the stat sheet at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, with Bishop contributing as a receiver, Cooper getting work in the run game and Matthews making tackles on defense. With injuries thinning parts of the roster, several backups also got extended snaps, giving Texas a broader look at who can handle real game action.

For a team with bigger goals ahead, those reps matter just as much as the final margin. The Longhorns have already shown they can control a game like this one, but the deeper question is how the depth chart settles once the roster gets healthier and the competition stiffens. Performances like these do not answer everything, but they do create a little more pressure on the staff to keep the right young pieces involved. [Read more 🡒]
