Longhorns Ignite Intense Position Battles as Spring Football Kicks Off

As Texas' spring practice kicks off, intense battles for key positions promise to heat up the competition and captivate Longhorns fans.

As spring football kicks off for Texas on March 9th, fans are eagerly anticipating the 15-session practice schedule that culminates in the Spring Game on April 18th. While the Longhorns have a solid foundation on both sides of the ball, a few intriguing position battles are set to heat up the field this spring.

Boundary Cornerback: Bo Mascoe vs. Kobe Black

In the battle for boundary corner, Bo Mascoe and Kobe Black are set to showcase their skills. Both players bring impressive length and coverage abilities to the table.

Mascoe, with a pre-existing connection to Texas Cornerbacks Coach Mark Orphey from their Rutgers days, faces a strong challenge from Black, who decided to stay in Austin after reconsidering the transfer portal. Blake Gideon’s influence in retaining Black highlights his potential impact.

Despite rumors suggesting Mascoe as the frontrunner, this competition is far from decided. Both athletes have the makings of week-one starters, and the coaching staff faces a tough decision with such talent at cornerback in 2026.

Strong Defensive End: Lance Jackson vs. Zina Umeozulu

Lance Jackson made a splash as a true freshman in 2025, showcasing strength and maturity on the field. He spent considerable time on the strong side under former DC Pete Kwiatkowski and enters 2026 poised to secure the starting role.

Zina Umeozulu, meanwhile, has transformed into a versatile player reminiscent of Ethan Burke. With added weight, Umeozulu is ready to compete fiercely with Jackson for the strong side edge in Will Muschamp’s defense. Though Jackson seems to have an edge, Umeozulu’s decision to remain at Texas signals his determination to fight for the spot.

Tight End: Nick Townsend vs. Emaree Winston

The tight end position presents another captivating competition. Nick Townsend, who primarily served as a motion blocker last year, is expected to catch more passes this spring. His potential as a receiving threat is something the coaching staff is eager to explore.

Emaree Winston, however, presents an intriguing alternative. Despite his compact frame (6'1", 237 lbs.), Winston’s route-running prowess and flexibility make him a compelling option. Drawing comparisons to Delanie Walker, Winston’s skill set fits well within Steve Sarkisian’s offensive scheme, where versatility is key.

While Michigan State’s Michael Masunas joins to bolster the in-line role, the battle between Townsend and Winston for the main receiving tight end spot is one to watch. Winston appears to have the edge for the "F" or move-tight end role, but Townsend could surprise everyone this spring.

With these position battles heating up, Texas fans have plenty to look forward to as the Longhorns prepare for an exciting season ahead. Stay tuned!
