In the heart of Austin, Texas, the spotlight shines brightly on Texas junior Giavonna Meeks from Denver, who has been crowned the 2026 USTFCCCA South Region Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. This accolade comes as no surprise given Meeks' stellar indoor season, capped off with a bronze medal in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championships, where she achieved a remarkable 24.11m (79-1.25).
Meeks' dominance was on full display at the SEC Indoor Championship, where she clinched the title with a winning throw of 24.44m (80-2.25). Her performance was nothing short of commanding, as all five of her successful throws outdistanced the competition.
A newcomer to the Texas team, Meeks has wasted no time making her mark. She's consistently thrown over 21.50 meters this year, setting the top 24 marks in Texas program history for the weight throw. Her efforts have earned her All-SEC First Team honors and two SEC Women's Field Athlete of the Week titles in February.
Among her season highlights, Meeks claimed victories at the Corky Classic (22.37m | 73-5.75), the Razorback Invitational (23.65m | 77-7.25), and the SEC Indoor Championships. She also set a Texas program record at the Tyson Invitational with a throw of 24.49m (80-4.25), which ranked second nationally and first in the SEC for the indoor season. Beyond her weight throw prowess, Meeks showcased her versatility by placing fifth in the shot put at the Corky Classic (15.58m | 51-1.50) and seventh at the Razorback Invitational (16.28m | 53-5).
This award continues a proud tradition for Texas, marking the third consecutive year a Longhorn has been honored as the South Region Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. Meeks joins the ranks of past winners like Kelsey Daniel (2025) and Leo Neugebauer (2024), becoming the seventh Longhorn to receive this recognition and the second woman, following the legendary three-time honoree Destinee Hooker.
