Easton Royal Just Gave Texas Fans One More Reason To Fume

As the Texas Longhorns grapple with back-to-back defeats, five-star receiver Easton Royal adds insult to injury by flaunting his newfound allegiance to the Florida Gators.

Texas took another hit on the field Saturday, and Easton Royal made sure to remind everyone about it afterward.

After Florida knocked off the Longhorns at home, the five-star receiver who recently switched his commitment from Texas to Florida jumped on X and tossed out a quick jab at his former school.

"Go Gators," Royal wrote on X, with multiple laughing emojis,

It was the latest sting in a rough stretch for Texas. The Longhorns have dropped two straight games on the field, and that slide includes last weekend’s loss in the Red River Rivalry, when they entered as the No. 1 team in the country and left with a major setback.

Royal’s swipe landed especially hard because he flipped his commitment from Texas to Florida less than a week ago, turning what had already been a frustrating run for the Longhorns into an even messier week.

His decision didn’t come out of nowhere. Royal had been visiting Florida, and LSU was also expected to be in the mix since it is his hometown program. Still, his choice to go with the Gators caught plenty of attention, and it also led him to cancel his trips to the Forty Acres.

The relationship between Royal and the Florida staff has clearly resonated with him. After one of his high school games, he pointed to Sumrall being there as part of what helped change his mind, praising the coach and the program around him.

"It means a lot," Royal said of Sumrall. "It just goes to show why I changed my decision from Texas to Florida.

[Sumrall] is a great guy, great coach. Coach Davis is a great guy, great coach.

That's the type of guys I want to play for, be led by, look up to, and just get developed by."

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian did his part on the recruiting trail, stopping by multiple times to watch Royal play and even making a visit on Oct. 2 to check in with him. But just over a week later, Royal flipped his commitment anyway.

That decommitment stung the Longhorns’ recruiting class, even if the recruitment was still wide open and Florida didn’t exactly snatch him away in the dark. Texas will keep pushing in the 2027 cycle and try to land the next one. For now, though, Royal has the upper hand online.

Texas May Be Getting A Very Different Florida Offense Than Expected

Floridas quarterback situation is suddenly a major subplot for the Longhorns, with Aaron Philo trending toward sitting out the upcoming game because of a shoulder injury. If he cannot go, Texas would be preparing for a different look entirely, with sophomore Tramell Jones lined up to make his first career start in a game that already carries plenty of weight for both teams.

Jones was a four-star recruit and has flashed efficiency in limited action this season, enough to draw praise from head coach Jon Sumrall as a potential starting quarterback. For Texas, that means the film and the plan may need a late adjustment, because the offense coming to Austin could be shaped as much by inexperience as by the usual Florida personnel. [Read more 🡒]

Texas Suddenly Has A Colin Simmons Problem Fans Will Fear

Colin Simmons gave Texas everything it could want from its star edge rusher before the game turned sideways against Florida. He had already piled up eight tackles, four tackles for loss and a sack when he went down with a lower-body injury early in the fourth quarter, a sequence that immediately changed the feel of the Longhorns defense.

Simmons was taken off the field for further examination, and Texas felt the effect almost right away as Florida moved ahead on a field goal while he was out. For a defense built around his disruption, the bigger concern now is how much time the Longhorns may have to manage without the player who had been driving their pass rush all game. [Read more 🡒]

Texas May Have A Colin Simmons Problem They Can't Afford

Texas got a scare in the fourth quarter against Florida when Colin Simmons, its star pass rusher and the nations sack leader, went down with an apparent leg injury. He was helped off the field and taken for further evaluation, leaving the Longhorns with an immediate concern about one of the most important players on their defense.

Simmons has been central to everything Texas wants to do up front, giving the Longhorns the kind of edge pressure that can change a game in a hurry. Any absence would put extra pressure on a defense that leans on him to disrupt opposing quarterbacks, and it adds another layer of urgency as Texas waits to learn more about the extent of the injury.
