DeMarvion Overshown Gave Texas Fans An Emotional Reminder Of Brotherhood

Ahead of the iconic Red River Rivalry, DeMarvion Overshown pays tribute to his late teammate Jake Ehlinger with a heartfelt nod to their shared Texas roots.

DeMarvion Overshown made his way into AT&T Stadium on Thursday night carrying a tribute that meant a lot more than game-day style.

With Texas and Oklahoma set to meet in the Red River Rivalry this weekend, the former Longhorn showed up before the Dallas Cowboys’ matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers wearing a custom burnt orange Texas jersey honoring Jake Ehlinger. The No. 48 on the back matched the number Ehlinger wore before his death in May 2021 from an accidental drug overdose.

Ehlinger, the younger brother of former Texas standout and current Denver Broncos quarterback Sam Ehlinger, spent two seasons as Overshown’s teammate in Austin. Overshown has continued to keep Ehlinger’s memory front and center, even now that he’s in the NFL.

The entrance was captured by Nick Harris of the Fort Worth-Star Telegram.

Overshown did not play against Tampa Bay because he is still dealing with the hamstring injury he suffered in Week 1 against the New York Giants.

The Cowboys took Overshown in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft after he spent five years at Texas.

After Ehlinger died in 2021, Overshown posted a long message on social media that laid out how deeply he felt the loss. He wrote, "Fighting back tears while having a smile on my face, I type this," Overshown wrote in 2021.

"In times like these the first thing we want to do is question why take such a precious soul so soon. The Almighty One will forever be the only one with that answer.

Everyone knew who "Sam little brother " was but only a few of us knew Jake Ehlinger. Jake was a teammate, friend and most of all a brother.

Jake came in knowing that being the star quarterback brother would be a title he could never get rid of."

He went on to remember Ehlinger as someone who lifted people up and made an impression the moment he got to campus. "What most people don't know is Jake made a name for himself as soon as he stepped on campus.

Good or bad day Jake would come in with his head held high, a baggy shirt, and Birkenstock's on and was guaranteed to put a smile on at least one person face. I couldn't count how many times one of his jokes in the linebacker meeting room has gotten me through the day.

Even times like this, with him being no longer with us, I still think back to all of the crazy memories of him and it just brightens the mood a little bit more. I can see him right now up there making his pops laugh.

My brother. My Friend.

I miss you and may you rest peacefully and watch over us."

In the season after Ehlinger’s death, Overshown was named a Butkus Award semifinalist and earned All-Big 12 honorable mention recognition.

Texas Gets A Rivalry Boost From A Familiar Face Returning

Hollywood Smothers has already become a useful part of Texas run game after arriving from Oklahoma by way of North Carolina State, and his presence has been felt in 2026 even with the Longhorns still sorting out their backfield. He missed a recent game because of a lower leg injury, but the timing of his return could hardly be better for a Texas team heading into one of the most charged dates on the schedule.

Smothers is healthy again and expected to be available for the Red River Rivalry against the Sooners, the program he once called home. For Texas, that adds both depth and a little extra bite to a matchup that rarely needs any help getting there. [Read more 🡒]

Red River Just Got More Personal For Texas In A New Way

The buildup to the Red River Rivalry already has plenty of familiar edge, but Texas is also dealing with a newer kind of familiarity on the other sideline. Parker Livingstone, a junior wide receiver, transferred from Texas to Oklahoma after the 2025 season, adding another layer to a matchup that always seems to find a way to feel personal. Steve Sarkisian has acknowledged the reality of letting Livingstone and other players move on, and now the Longhorns have to sort through those departures as part of the backdrop to one of the sports most emotional weekends.

Livingstone has not been as productive at Oklahoma so far this season, but his presence still gives Texas another reason to pay attention to who is lining up across from it. Arch Manning noted the personal dynamics that can come with former teammates facing each other, which only underscores how much this game can stretch beyond the scoreboard. For Texas, the rivalry now carries a little extra locker-room history, and the Longhorns will see exactly how that plays once the teams take the field. [Read more 🡒]

Texas Could Get A Huge Red River Boost At Perfect Time

A bye week can be a handy reset in October, and Texas may be getting the timing just right with the Red River showdown looming. The Longhorns are heading into the Oklahoma game with several key pieces trending back toward full health, including senior running back Hollywood Smothers and sophomore tight end Nick Townsend, while junior defensive back Xaiver Filsaime is in line to make his season debut.

For a rivalry game that often comes down to depth as much as star power, that kind of reinforcements matters. Texas is still navigating the usual injury uncertainty this time of year, with several players from both sides listed as questionable or unavailable, but the Longhorns at least appear to be moving in the right direction at the perfect moment.
