Dante Moore’s decision to stay at Oregon instead of entering the 2026 NFL Draft has already become one of the more fascinating bets in college football. He passed on a spot where he was projected as a top-5 pick, and while that choice came with real risk, NFL insiders now see a path that could leave him in an even better place a year from now.
The biggest reason? Moore is being talked about as more than just the top quarterback in the 2027 class.
Evaluators reportedly view him as the favorite to go No. 1 overall, and that’s in a draft cycle that has already drawn heavy attention from NFL teams. After two comparatively "weak" draft classes, especially at the quarterbacks position, teams have reportedly stockpiled 2027 picks with Moore, Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning, Ohio State Buckeyes receiver Jeremiah Smith and Notre Dame Fighting Irish cornerback Leonard Moore in mind.
That group has become one of the defining storylines in college football this summer, and Moore is right in the middle of it. By returning to Eugene, he didn’t simply delay his NFL arrival for a softer class. He stepped into a much more crowded and competitive conversation.
One NFC scout told ESPN: "An effortless passer that's just so natural at everything," an NFC scout told ESPN. "If he can play better against high-quality opponents, he has a chance to be the top pick.
His skill set is quite similar to C.J. Stroud's when he was coming out."
That comparison matters. Stroud went No. 2 and quickly turned into an NFL star, which is exactly the kind of trajectory scouts are imagining for Moore if his game keeps trending up. The league clearly sees a quarterback with the tools to step in and matter fast.
There is, though, one obvious checkpoint left for Moore to clear: how he performs against elite competition. In Oregon’s first season with him as the starter, the Ducks went 13-2, but both losses came against the eventual National Champion Indiana Hoosiers.
Moore’s worst football came in those two games. He threw three interceptions and lost two fumbles in the losses, and he was sacked repeatedly.
In the College Football Playoff semifinal, his three first-half turnovers helped Indiana build a 35-7 halftime lead.
That’s the piece scouts will keep circling back to this season. Manning will get his share of attention too, but Moore is being viewed as a real pro prospect, not just a name riding summer hype. Another strong year in Eugene could do more than preserve his draft stock - it could push it higher.
And the ceiling is obvious. If Moore leads Oregon on a deep College Football Playoff run, delivers the Ducks their first-ever National Championship and wins the Heisman Trophy along the way, the 2027 draft picture could look very different. In that version of the story, he likely lands at No. 1 overall.
That’s the dream scenario, and it’s still just that. But the fact that NFL insiders are openly mapping it out says plenty about how they see Moore. His return to coach Dan Lanning’s team could end up being one of the most lucrative decisions a college quarterback has ever made.
Moore, a former 5-star recruit, started all 15 games as a Duck in 2025 after playing five games as a true freshman at UCLA. Last season in Detroit, he put together one of the most efficient campaigns in the country, finishing No. 3 nationally with a 72.9 completion percentage and No. 7 with a 166.73 passer rating.
