In a thrilling matchup in Portland, Texas junior forward Cam Heide found himself in a high-pressure situation against No. 3-seed Gonzaga. Despite sitting out for over 17 minutes in the second half due to foul trouble, Heide delivered when it mattered most, nailing a crucial three-pointer to secure Texas' spot in the Sweet 16.
The game was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams exchanging blows until Gonzaga's star forward, Graham Ike, brought the Bulldogs within one point with just 40 seconds remaining. With the momentum seemingly shifting towards Gonzaga, Heide's clutch shot from the corner extended Texas' lead to 72-68, sealing the victory.
"Coach [Sean] Miller told me during the timeout that he was putting me in to take the shot," Heide shared. "I caught the ball in the corner, took the shot, and it went in."
This was Heide's only field goal of the game, having taken just one other shot early in the first half. He finished the night with one assist in 13 minutes of play, but his impact was undeniable.
Coach Miller had confidence in Heide's shooting ability, even in the game's final moments. "Cam is arguably our best three-point shooter for a situation like that," Miller stated.
Heide is no stranger to the NCAA Tournament spotlight. Last season with Purdue, he showcased his shooting prowess by hitting 3-of-6 from beyond the arc in a Sweet 16 game against Houston.
Miller explained the decision to have Heide on the floor for the final play. "Leaving him out didn't make sense.
The play unfolded perfectly, with [Tramon Mark] driving and finding Cam open. It was great to see him make that shot."
Tramon Mark, who contributed six points on a tough shooting night, described the pivotal play. "Coach drew up a play for me to attack the basket. When the defense collapsed, I kicked it out to Cam, and I knew he'd hit it."
Heide's journey with the Longhorns this season has been a rollercoaster. Initially a reserve, he stepped up after sophomore Nic Codie's injury, starting 27 consecutive games. While his performance has been up and down, moments like these highlight his potential and importance to the team.
