Arch Manning’s name is back in the mix for one of college football’s quarterback honors.
Texas’ senior signal-caller was named a Top 15 candidate for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award on Thursday, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation announced. Manning had already landed on the preseason watch list on Aug. 19 as one of 27 FBS quarterbacks selected, marking his second straight year on that list.
The recognition comes after a strong start to the season for Manning and the Longhorns. Texas is 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the SEC, with two AP Top 25 wins already on the résumé, including the 24-23 upset of then-No.
1/1 Ohio State on Sept. 12.
Through four starts, the New Orleans native has completed 73 of 115 passes for 862 yards and seven touchdowns, while averaging 215.5 passing yards per game. He’s also made an impact on the ground, ranking third on the team with 82 rushing yards.
Manning has now won 11 of his last 12 starts dating back to last season, and six of those games have come against AP Top 20 opponents. Four of those victories were against Top 10 teams.
His most recent performance came at No. 14/13 Tennessee on Sept. 26, when he completed 14 of 19 passes for 201 yards to help Texas pick up its second ranked win of the year.
The Ohio State comeback remains the defining moment of Texas’ season so far. Manning was named the SEC’s Co-Offensive Player of the Week after that game, his third career SEC weekly honor and first since Nov.
3, 2025. He finished 23 of 37 for 195 yards and a touchdown against the Buckeyes, then led three straight touchdown drives to close the game, each one at least 12 plays and 72 yards.
Texas erased a 23-3 deficit, and Manning’s late surge included 13 completions on 18 attempts to seven different receivers for 125 yards and a touchdown, plus three carries for 26 yards. Two fourth-down completions in Texas territory kept those drives alive.
That rally carried historical weight, too. The Longhorns became the only team in the past 15 years to finish a win with three straight touchdown drives of 12 or more plays.
The comeback was the third-largest against an AP No. 1 team this century, and Texas became the first non-conference opponent this century to score 21 or more points in the fourth quarter against Ohio State. It was also the first overall team since Michigan in 2022 to do it.
Manning has also extended another notable streak: he has thrown a touchdown pass in four straight games against a Top 5 opponent, the longest such run by an FBS quarterback since Ohio State’s Will Howard had a six-game streak in 2024. He now has four fourth-quarter comebacks in his career, including wins over Kentucky, Mississippi State and Michigan last year.
His season opened in a big way against Texas State on Sept. 5, when he went 20 of 27 for 305 yards and four touchdowns. That was his second career game with at least 300 passing yards and four passing touchdowns, and his first since Arkansas in 2025. Against UTSA on Sept. 19, he completed 17 of 33 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns and added 50 rushing yards on nine carries, finishing as Texas’ leading rusher in the 30-6 win.
The Golden Arm Award honors quarterbacks who stand out both on and off the field. It is presented by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation with presenting partner A.
O. Smith Corporation, and the foundation says its mission is to promote football while building character, citizenship and academic commitment in young athletes.
The selection committee will keep narrowing the field in the weeks ahead before finalists are chosen and the 2026 winner is announced at the annual ceremony in Baltimore on Wednesday, Dec. 9.
Texas heads to Dallas next for the Allstate Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 2:30 p.m. CT at the Cotton Bowl Stadium. The game will air on ABC with Sean McDonough, Greg McElroy and Katie George on the call.

Texas Gets A Rivalry Boost From A Familiar Face Returning
Hollywood Smothers has already become a useful part of Texas run game after arriving from Oklahoma by way of North Carolina State, and his presence has been felt in 2026 even with the Longhorns still sorting out their backfield. He missed a recent game because of a lower leg injury, but the timing of his return could hardly be better for a Texas team heading into one of the most charged dates on the schedule.
Smothers is healthy again and expected to be available for the Red River Rivalry against the Sooners, the program he once called home. For Texas, that adds both depth and a little extra bite to a matchup that rarely needs any help getting there. [Read more 🡒]
Red River Just Got More Personal For Texas In A New Way
The buildup to the Red River Rivalry already has plenty of familiar edge, but Texas is also dealing with a newer kind of familiarity on the other sideline. Parker Livingstone, a junior wide receiver, transferred from Texas to Oklahoma after the 2025 season, adding another layer to a matchup that always seems to find a way to feel personal. Steve Sarkisian has acknowledged the reality of letting Livingstone and other players move on, and now the Longhorns have to sort through those departures as part of the backdrop to one of the sports most emotional weekends.
Livingstone has not been as productive at Oklahoma so far this season, but his presence still gives Texas another reason to pay attention to who is lining up across from it. Arch Manning noted the personal dynamics that can come with former teammates facing each other, which only underscores how much this game can stretch beyond the scoreboard. For Texas, the rivalry now carries a little extra locker-room history, and the Longhorns will see exactly how that plays once the teams take the field. [Read more 🡒]
Texas Could Get A Huge Red River Boost At Perfect Time
A bye week can be a handy reset in October, and Texas may be getting the timing just right with the Red River showdown looming. The Longhorns are heading into the Oklahoma game with several key pieces trending back toward full health, including senior running back Hollywood Smothers and sophomore tight end Nick Townsend, while junior defensive back Xaiver Filsaime is in line to make his season debut.
For a rivalry game that often comes down to depth as much as star power, that kind of reinforcements matters. Texas is still navigating the usual injury uncertainty this time of year, with several players from both sides listed as questionable or unavailable, but the Longhorns at least appear to be moving in the right direction at the perfect moment.
